music in the shed

Started the day with 'April Fool's Day Morn' and then followed with my whole Loudon Wainwright III's canon.
From many of the heartstabbers, I pick this one for the lucky and the uninitiated.

Kevin Coyne amazing artist, I mixed his last CD Life is almost wonderful a collaboration with his and my, good friend Brendan Croker, they were touring it shortly before he died, he was on oxygen on stage!! only a couple of weeks before the end but he still possesd the power of earlier times. It was a project that we did by "Mail" Brendan sent him the guitar parts in the post on a Cd and Kevin returned the vocal a while later on a cd also My job was to remove some of the more excessive outbursts from the vocals so he had at least a chance of performing it on stage then to balance the elements and make them sound as one in the same space, weeks of work acomplished with one of the early workstations a AMS Neve Audiofile and a neve desk I get a nice credit on the Album and Kevin did me a drawing which I still have I'll photo it later and post it up. Brendan gave me a guitar! and lots of Beer during the mixing.

Neve desk, Alberts in Sydney had one, same studio that AC/DC recorded in with Brother George Young and Harry Vanda as producers. My band hired the studio for our "45" at $170 an hour circa 1979, in there for over 10 hours. Studio had Urei time aligned studio monitors, and for radio re-mix down Auratones, EMT plate reverb was a mechanical monster. Col Abrahams asked us if we wanted a click track in the 'cans...."click track..whats that?...we were doing the local pub scene constantly and were tight enough to carry the recording technique of the day, instruments first then vocals over the independent instruments, hard going playing a whole progression without vocal ques. We were a power trio.

Cannot recall how i ended up with bought new Kevin Coyne import to Australia ( Anthem Records town hall for the locals reading, most of my LP collection was import ). Process in the day of overseas recordings, as EMI owned a pressing plant at Homebush. Copy of half inch master, sent to EMI 301 Sydney ( a dreadful studio and dills running the place ) had a Neumann mastering lathe for acetate master to press shop production. Rubbish quality was the end outcome and also our much valued Boomerang House half inch master tape was turned into "$10 demo tape sound" by EMI Saga continued...another time. j

After all this talk about depression and suicide , here`s Buster again to cheer us up with a song about someone he just shot over a card game .......

( Correction , someone who just shot himself ......... oh dear , back to square one again .... ) ............

More `sixties stuff ........

A repeat performance .......... But it features the best version of the Billy Roberts ( or Dino Valenti , depending who you believe ) song ....... and the most exciting bass player ( Louis Kabe ) ever to walk God`s earth ........... ( Les Claypool excepted , maybe ...... ) .............

It goes a bit psychedelic / weird in the middle , but Louis still owns it , and then some ........

...... and then you hooked the 3C(E) into top , eh Hamish ? ........... ;) ................

In Rod Burris`s book on Vincents , he tells of an Australian Vincent owner who when out for a spin , found himself firstly overtaking a police motorcyclist , and then the speeding rider the cop was chasing ..............

Joe ( de-elocution lessons ) Strummer and Mick ( I`ve never lived below the tenth floor ) Jones recount a holiday from hell ..........

( They want to try walking down Stapleton Road at two in the morning ..... same sort of vibe without having to pay for the plane fare .... ) ..........
