NGK B8ES

Suppose this is old news here, cannot recall, if the case. Search showed nothing on that Title.

View here this is a problem for straight HT wire and NGK 5K ohm covers ( latter also discontinued ). The substitute incorporated "resistor" ( BR8ES ) is in fact NOT a replacement in our setups for Laverda as such. You will need to remove the resistor cover version for a straight through cover. Have not checked what is common available for straight through covers, others may update that situation.

Some of the engines here run inductive suppression HT, i would use R version plugs in that application, however, if cornered. Just ordered 10 plugs non R version while available

John,

I was not aware NGK had discontinued non-resistor plugs. I need to stock up now!

And for those of us that have older bikes with a magneto ignition, some magnetos do not like resistor plugs.

I have heard of people removing the top of the plug (it unscrews) and replacing the resistor with a piece of brass rod. I have not personally tried this but will soon.

That's a bugger.
What other plugs are available/ being used? Been buying NGKs for so long lost touch with other brands.
From the70s for my SF2, came new with Champion N2, also Bosch W260t2 was another from memory.
How about B9ES? Haven't seen NGK in any Super Cheaps stores for a long time either.

B9s will soot before you get out of the garage.

Not in an SF1/2/3. I've run them since Bosch W260T2s changed to some other numbering system. Never fouled a B9 in a twin in 100's of thousands of km ... not ever. Triples maybe/probably.

I recently went from B9s to BR9s after fitting 0.5ohm coils, very well insulated leads and straight plug caps (the sort you could probably find on a Victa mower!!) at the recommendation of the owner of Fast Bike Gear in NZ, who has coils made for him by the joint that make Nologies. He brands them Plasma coils.

I have four brand new genuine NGK resistor caps (from Gowanlochs) and two unused B9s - genuine , from Repco. I had B9s in the SFQ while running 3ohm Dynas - no hint of a fouled plug and plenty of slow running.

I've never been a fan of the NGKs and have stuck with Champion as long as possible. But, they too are steadily being nudged from the market.

I have found Beru 14Z-3CU to be a suitable replacement for the Campion N3C, for which many use the NGK8s. A further alternative is the Denso W24ESU.

A replacement for the Champion N2C is the Denso W27ESU.

Denso has joined the big players in the OEM market and should be readily available. I remember them being OE in Toyotas.

keeping these old clunkers is becoming much more difficult lately, NGK pulling the plug on caps and plugs, difficulty in sourcing correct head gaskets, my exhaust man who was brilliant having a stroke and closing down, now my Powder coater is also closing
Speedo drive parts running out as well as left/right hand crank webs, output shafts running out, glad Bourbon is still available
even my favorite bike transport mob who only live 3 klms from us have sold up, been using them since Jess was a pup as his Dad moved our bikes
FFS, getting way more difficult keeping these old clunkers on the road

Used to use Champion N3`s ..... when they seemed to disappear I switched to NGK BR8ES and stuck with them to the very end ........ firstly with the original metal shrouded caps , then with NGK caps ( straight run ones , not angled ..... and black , not tacky red ) ....... Think the caps were 5k ohm , but to be honest didn`t take much notice ....... everything worked just fine , so didn`t worry about it ... :) ........ ( 1200 with 8 :1 , then 9 :1 , or thereabouts ) .......

BTW ........ Why are Laverdas old clunkers , when Ducatis from the same period are highly regarded " classics " ........ Remember someone once said , when comparing `seventies MV Agustas to Laverdas ......... " The trouble with Laverda owners , is that they don`t realise what they`ve got " ........

Just a thought ...........

Running B9s in my SFC forever, don't remember ever fouling one. Maybe you should check your choke plungers aren't hanging up Paul!!

Thanks for that plug info Piet

Laverdas are being ridden, "classic" Ducatis (and MVs) are mostly static exhibits in living rooms or glass cases, many of which probably no longer have working engine internals! The ratio of static 750SFCs to those that still roll under their own steam isn't much to be proud of either...

Maybe the parts supply needs to dry up before Lavs are considered classics.

Obviously depends on fuel and riding style.
My SFC kills 9s after two starts. I run 8s, used to run 9s.
I've gone down 10 points on average on the pilots on all my Laverda and run NGK8s where I used to run 9s, ie, the S and the SFC.
Paul

I’ve been running B9ES in all my 750 for as long as I can remember on road and track, except the Elettronica which uses B8ES. When I thought they were giving problems, the cause was something else..

mmmm not just the Laverda 'kept on the road Red, would direct all to the thread topic, " getting old" bike and rider are fading at similar pace...

Rode the 79 Jota to a RnR Car festival here weekend just gone, 74 year old ballast, 69 year old pilot, 44 year old bike...get the theme? Old.

The 74yo Ballast ( Red polka dot ) was the younger model, there was the reduced speed version ( green dress ) later on, guessing she did a runner from the nursing home like all bad girls do, "runaway.... Dell Shannon clocked it...

As for plugs, use what works, the guides here from the many old timers can be your guide to riding away from a nursing home...catch me if you can, avoid adult children, worse than the police, they want to lock you up or away....j

After rebuilding the top end of my 77' Jota Keith Nairn recommended i use NGK 8Es = that's good enough for me.

Used projected nose plugs ( with caution ), similarly those BPxES are discontinued. Reason i started this thread, a bunch of 7 grade NGK were being offered at 50% price reduction at one supplier. HTH j.

Extrapolating, given the only real concern from my perspective, is the contamination of the porcelane nose for plugs. only thing it could be when plugs fail to fire reliably.

Home plug cleaning may be our new methodology. Less than $50, worth a blast... yes i know its getting worse... puns are not what they used to be... wheres me air hose... just bought one plug cleaner for $36 delivered.
