Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (Perth)

Only one Laverda (mine - of 620 participants) but an interesting Benelli (with more interesting dash button) - is this what could have been…?

2026 distinguished gentleman's ride in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Clutch decided to go a bit slack on the outbound run which together with alot of stop/start city traffic led to an overheat. Bike much happier after a cable adjust and 10 minute cool off, after which it ran with no more real complaints. Got to chill by the roadside with an old Suzuki 500 2 stroke and an Enfield in the same way.

Passed some pre war Indians who also had to stop for fettling!

The Brough has apparently been in the same family for over a century now.

The beginning and near the end of the day's riding yesterday, including Guzzi owner admiring Laverda on arrival. I've got a lot of video of a slow speed mob of noisy bikes that isn't particularly inspiring!

Didn't see any other Laverdas out but did have a few folks come over and talk about it, mostly in terms of 'You don't see many of those around,' and 'I always wanted one of those...'

Starting up is getting easier now the temperatures are climbing a bit, but the bike starts misfiring if you don't give it a minute or two to warm up. Plugs are generally very sooty when inspected.

One of the oil cooler hoses decided to loosen off and start a minor leak, and the rev counter seemed to decide to misbehave at one point. Keeping the speed up, it ran with no other complaints albeit it sounded like it was running a bit rough at the end there.

Next weekend will be for some troubleshooting. I expect the plugs are going to need a clean again, and I still need to see about fine tuning my ignition (I installed the ignitech myself a few years back and could well be slightly off TDC so slightly advanced/retarded), drop my idle a bit, and see if it isn't just over-jetted for my use (carbs are as supplied by Red!).

Plugs shouldn't be sooty - over-rich (chokes hanging up?). Ignitech installation can easily go awry when you're setting (and understanding) base advance and the like. Might be worth revisiting ... you definitely need a piston stop, a degree wheel and a strobe to get it done right - then you can forget it.

Great to see you Hamish, and Simon..what a lovely evening for a ride. Now far more informed about the events at Brands and Donnington! And did you and Simon ever agree about the formula to calculate the cylinder capacity...what is mine now running 78 mm pistons?😁

Thanks..must say with Miks it feels like 1500😁. Lovely thing...and I also have an SP1 and Husky 701sm, but the Laverda is something else 👍

I have the same pistons in my 3C.
I hope to get the engine back before too long, so as to finish the bike and sell it.

Rain and thunder expected for the afternoon, early sunday morning ride with my youngest. He really likes to go out, I won't be surprised if he'll get his licence later on, here he's figuring out how the Laverda works ;)
This is also one of the places where an aircraft crew member (the tailgunner in this case) from aircraft crashed in the IJsselmeer washed ashore, months later, in this case an American B-24 Liberator, none of the crew (9) survived :(

After testriding a new Triumph, I took the scenic route home.

Ferried the main at Fahr

Then stopped at the Konstitutionssäule (Bavarian Constitution Column) erected 200 years ago to celebrate the Constitution of 1818, in which the King unpressured yielded some of his power to Parliament and independent courts.

Also stopped at an Elderberry Plantation. Never knew this was a thing. They grow elderberreis for Bionade elderberry lemonade. And Monty Python sketches, I guess.

Ha Ha, but I'd have to stay off the corrugations if I chucked a slab or 2 on there - don't want 'em too frothy;)
I meant to swap it back for my normal chrome handrail, 'cause rack does get some comments, but I have been a bit lazy, ah well, ready for next trip.....
Rack is actually extremely strong with some judicious bracing (not obvious) and I wouldn't hesitate to fully load it for a major trip.
(Edit - Meant to say, After being much maligned on here....) It did about 4,500kms to Sydney and back (via some back roads) for the not the Barry in 2017 carrying swag, tent and some tools. (Obviously I didn't put too much weight back there but it would have handled it!!)

Rack envy, it's a real thing. Celebrate the rack in all its glory. My little joke, derived from my first big outback Queesland trip were I was constantly searching out welders to repair my piss poor rack. It's hard to design a rack that is fully structural and isn't a horror to look at. These days the equivalent for me are camping chairs, or 4-season jackets, or even Sausage Rolls; perfection is hard to find
