Over the Border

Story of a road trip north,
So over the last while,Red has been rebuilding one of his Serbian 1200's for me.
Progress had been steady, punctuated by multiple texts, progress reports, the odd invoice and plenty of laughs, anyhow, he was getting close to finishing all the work that he had to do, there was only one problem.
The Queensland border was closed to Sydney siders due of coarse to the Pangolin virus ( poor Pangolins, they get such a hard rap) so we had to wait.

Finally on the 1st of December the border was opened, plans were made, it was time for a road trip.
Brett decided he would come, mostly cause he doubted my ability to actually make it to Reds without getting lost but mainly to catch up with Red and Max
and check on a set of heads he had up there.
Brett also wanted to take one of his CCP vans  :-[ but I said that Rusty the trusty Hilux would do just fine.
Neil Trillo also had a Corsa that needed to go to Reds so that was factored in.

So last Friday we set off.
First stop was Yogi's place to pick up Brett, Yogi had a bacon and egg roll waiting for us and a packed esky full of home cooked food, fruit, beer and nibbles so we didn't have to stop at Maccas.
And off we went, there is nothing quite like setting off on a road trip to pick up a Laverda, its always going to be good.

The Pacific Highway is now fully sorted, its a great road, you don't get tired and the traffic just flows. Bets were made as to our ETA, Brett said 4 and me 5, a lot of laughs were had, oh and a shed load of talk about Laverda's.
Coffs Harbour is still slow, even tried to find an MG dealership there cause I had my favorite T shirt on, but apparently the CCP is yet to make any inroads there.
Of coarse we stopped at New Italy, honestly who wouldn't want to stop there.
Didn't even see the border crossing ::) not sure what all the who ha was about, and finally pulled into Red and Max's oasis at ten past five :D

For those who have not been there, Red and Max's property is a something else.
They have there own little rainforest, the driveway snakes it way through the forest, over a bridge, winds up a hill, past various sheds and then the house and finally you are at Reds shed, truely beautiful.

Red and Max were there along with Mark and the 1200 was on the lifter.
So we settled into a glorious afternoon, checking various body work options, catching up, and every now and then punctuated by the glorious sound of a Redax fully sorted triple, there really is nothing like it :) :)
Red had done an amazing job, I was blown away, Yep that was a top day. :) :) :)
So more beer, Max cooked up a great feed, more beer and then finally about 11 we got out and started up Reds new truck, wow that is a thing of beauty,

Next day, spent in the shed, bleeding brakes and adjusting various bits, Paul Casson came over with his tank for Rosie, all painted up, that was very special, more laughs and Brett even got time to work on a friends car.
Loaded up the Serb, and also Tim's triple engine that was heading to Bondi and a set of GSXR wheels for my buddy Nick, oh and filled the back seat chockars with various Lav parts for people.
Spending time in the Redax shed is something else, its peaceful, there is always something to look at, and theres a rainforest outside and a full blown flock of parrots and galahs that come by every afternoon for a feed.

Anyhow, after a much quieter night and another great feed with Red and Max, that steak was something else :) it was time to head south again.
Got hit by the rain for the first 4 or 5 hours and then it cleared up.
Made it back no drama, stopped in at Yogi's again but sadly he wasn't there, so Brett and I enjoyed an end of road trip beer on his patio without him.

And now the 1200 is sitting on the lifter in my shed. :D
The more you look the more you find with that bike, Reds attention to detail is amazing,
Thanks Red, so stoked!!
And thank you Max for all your hospitality, it is amazing what you two have created up there, just beautiful.

So now all thats left is finish my bike :)
Ciao
Tom

Nice story TC, can't beat a good road trip :D

Just a gentle reminder - don't go swapping any spark plugs without checking the plug grade. You know it makes sense :-*

Cant wait to see it out on the road Tom excellent.
Oh and in Victoria we spell boarder like this BORDER
Ever thunk he did that on purpose to see if anyone read the whole story huh  :P :P

Great trip up there, started by a rare sighting of the elusive Yogi who had put a breakie feast for kings together and a road trip fare as Tom has already hinted on for the trip.

Now rolling into Redax Central it was such a real privilege to be the first interstate visitors to the Laverda world of Redax. Where else in Australia would you get that level of passion or expertise towards Laverda's I ask you.

Was under instruction to give Maxene two hugs one for myself and one for Wolfgang, he did ask me also to give Red one also but I opted for the double handshake. Was also great to catch up and have a chat to Mark who was there ( aka the Dellorto whisperer )

Red had Tom's immaculately prepared new bike sitting on the bench all ready to go except for the fitting of the cam cover. Tom needed to see the immaculate internals and the flash new Cam's in place before bolting it down. He also took some notes of  the method to proper install to ensure no leaks.  As rumor has it that someone in Sydney recently had a fail in that area ( shh )

Once that new engine was fired up, boy did it sound quiet, also crisp and clean which is a real bonus for show and shine himself as he is warmly known... or ( Mr Nail Palour frequenter when it rains to some others ) as he is known around the Laverda circles.  Man that primary is one of the most quiet I have ever heard I got to say Red builds the best engines.

Dinner well that was something else, Max had whipped up a real exotic pasta dish just the ticket after an 11 hour road trip ( as Tom was driving we were always going to be there at his time as he dawdled along in parts blaming the rain, found excuses to stop and then found Brisbane traffic  :o :o ) and then a few hours in the shed, it felt like we were in Italy to be honest.

Then we had a few bevvies and as Tom eluded to we went out to check out the truck.. but never let the truth get in the way of a good story Tom think it was more 10 ish as you were in bed by 11

Next morning Tom decided that he wanted to change a few things around so we had to do an exhausting few hours.. during this time looking closely at the bike it was amazing to see the level of detail which Red had gone to with custom make washers, master cylinder bracket to name but a few.

Later in the morning Paul dropped in with the freshly painted tank from Rosie so we sat that on the bike to see how it looked. We also got to have a lesson in how to turn off fuel taps from the Stig ( Redax test rider who has honed his skills on the track and would be the most experienced and successful Laverda race rider around but as commitments to the team he has forgone a stella career to focus on the development and testing riding side now days as great loss to the sport for sure ) ... For contractual reasons we cannot show his face in the photo.

The afternoon was spent more or less bleeding brakes working out brackets and such.. oh Tom did longingly look at Paul's Laverda Delivery Van and tried to convince him to let us take it back to Sydney so his bike wouldn't get wet but sadly for Tom Paul doesnt do Toyota's so well we had to try to weather proof the new bike. Oh and the boxes on the back of the ute including Nick's flash new wheels hope they didn't get too wet ( just image if we had had a van they would have been oh so dry ). I mean the level of detail and custom machining that went into them will be a shame to get them dirty when you put them on a bike. ( better get some tips of both Tom's well Tommy boy as show and shine is not so good on his wheels look at the 3C front wheel  :P )
Red does such a wonderful job on those wheels it just makes you want a set

Unloaded the Corsa, I think Tom has eyes now for a 120 as you can tell he is yearning for one by the spy shots that were taken when he didn't think anyone was watching. Then we loaded the new hot rod on and weatherproofed as much as we could for the trip home.

Up at 5 the next morning ( 6 in NSW but Queensland is still in hangover from Joe mode and they dont want their curtains fading ) and headed home in the driving rain. Tom looked on the bright side that his new bike would get a nice pressure clean, just hope none got in the carbs ( but that is another story for another day )
Stopped at the new services outside of Kempsey at Freddo's pies man that Massaman curry pie is to die for. Think we need to make it a stop over or detour on the Bellingen trip for sure.

Got back to Yogi's but alas the elusive VP was no where to be seen, so Tom and I had an Orange beer to end the trip.

Thanks Red and Max for the hospitality and as usual a simply stunning job on Tom's bike. I will dig up a before shot of that bike as am sure have one and the transition is simply amazing and a testament to all the hours that Red spends in the shed. Really is there anyone else in Australia who even comes close to this amount of detail and engine work.

You make the triple look smaller than I do a twin! Like Marty, you guys dwarf those bikes. I've posted a few pics of me racing the 1200 - I look like a chimp on it, size wise!!

Yep, those Serbians were a great set of container bikes eh Tom..?

One of the little ones morphed into a Montjuic race bike.. yep great set they were..  ;)

What would we do without Red and Maxene thinking ahead.. :P

Enjoy the new ride mate.. but watch out for the fuel tap Police..
