RGS Frame

went in the cellar with a scale. Damned heavy 19,5 kg without anything, no swinging arm no triple clams, no bolt.
Tubes walls are 3,5 mm!

As far as I know, Laverda also produced frames with CrMo steel for the RGS and SFC 1000, if it is true, maybe those are lighter.

If Peder could produce a RGS frame with 2 mm wall tube in theory weight will be about 60% of the origional. But some parts like the rear tubes behind the shocks and those between the main tubes also could be done with 1 mm material.
On the other side the headstock and the swinging arm pivots need some investment of material.

Unfortunately I forgot to weight the frame until I had fitted the front end, wheels, discs, tyres, handle bars and electrical box.
72kg.
Dry motor 87.5kg
CF tank w/ taps and filler
2.65kg.
I weighted everything including nuts bolts as I fitted them and the final weight came to 195kgs
Too bad I didn't weight the frame, s/arm before assembling.

Motoplast frame I have with swing-arm (steel) weights about 17 kilos IIRC. Swing-arm is heavy though, I would assume at least 3-4 Kilos. Bare frame then 13-14 kilos I'd say. And - just like the Motodd or space frame - much better accessibility to everything. you could even take the head and maybe even the barrels off with the engine in the frame. but dropping it is also not much hassle, as it just drops out of the frame by removing - I think - 4 bolts or so (180°)

I'm giving next years (competitive) racing a lot of thought, coupled with the fact that since building the current bike the rules have changed - 17inch wheels now allowed, upto 180 section tyres allowed just to name two. If I feel I can obtain an overall weight of the bike of 160kg then worth doing. I've a Monty based racer that weighs 125kg . Will see!!!!!

If I feel I can obtain an overall weight of the bike of 160kg then worth doing. I've a Monty based racer that weighs 125kg . Will see!!!!!
RGS already dragged their frame rails on 18" wheels (150 section slicks) and longer 370mm shocks. Don't see 17" as bringing any sort of improvement as their overall width is limited by the chain run (see Reds' Scorch efforts). Jacking up the rear even further opens another can of worms.

Get yourself a nice aluminium-framed jap bike... you'll immediately be competitive.

Hi Piet,
The engine would be raised higher in the new frame.
I currently run rear shocks of 390mm length, steering head approx 25 degrees, forks 35mm through top yokes,wheelbase 1440mm and she handles better than a standard setup. Current EEC rules don't allow slicks.

very much doubt you will get anywhere near 160kg, not with an endurance based Laverda triple
when we built our Scorch race bikes the Mule weighed in at 177kg, with oil, no fuel. They be slightly lighter now as replaced a few bits with Titanium and made the tanks alloy instead of fiberglass but would not be much lighter, at the best 175kg

No Starter motor, no Starter mechanism, no Charging system, run a small Lithium battery, no Gauges apart from a Lap timer, bikes are totally stripped of anything they do not need
Could drop a couple of more kg's by changing to say Oz Racing Wheels but at $6,000/set and I need 4 sets to cover both bikes, stuff that
Rather spend that money on designing and machining a new clutch for my engines

I believe your weight target would be 180-185kg for an Endurance based race bike
