Rgs Rear Shocks

The shock body on the piggyback Gazis on my Jota is an impressive 46.3mm OD. There may be other springs around that will fit, length and spring rate also need to be considered, but getting dimensions on springs is pretty hard. One thing I will say is that the springs I have are pretty damn stiff. I'm no lightweight (the guy at Suspension Improvements guessed 110kg but I think he was being diplomatic), but solo I have to back the spring preload all the way off, or my back wheel just doesn't move vertically at all. So a somewhat softer spring, even on a bloody heavy RGS, would be an advantage with Gazis.

There are optionalweight springs avalable for Icons and I think they have a PDF on sizes on there site, worth a skwise

Hey Cosi,
I've got a set of YSS ones that I think could be used (At the Bosses, if Max is still in town, LHS of the shed up high, one needs regassing and patching  :'( I'm pretty sure the spring width is ok, may have to score and another set of eyes from Mr suspension improvements, re trying a set of Gazzi's on at Alison street - damm good idea, please say hi to Pete Grey (pipemasters) for me.

Cheers

Peter
ps: Wilburs are cool, but getting a remote res to work is better - without opening the 4" grinder box.

The Ikon website is www.ikonsuspension.com

The recommended RGS shocks from Ikon are 362 long c/c Minimum length is 279 so 83mm travel, outside diameter of the springs is 57mm. Variable rate springs from 100-185 lb/in

I'll probably go with a pair of these as I hate the screw preload adjusters.

I have a pair of Ikon shocks unused for a 750SF, might try them first although they are 17mm shorter but the same spring just to see how they feel.

Not much info on these ones but they are cheap!

Believe me or not, it is worth the hassle. The YSS or Wilbers or the likes are so much better than classic Hagons or ikons (have no experience with the new Ikons with the alloy body though...).

Also make sure you take some slightly longer ones than originally installed, at least 365mm, better 370mm. The higher the rear the better the bike handles. much above 370 is a no-go though, as the center-stand will potentially not work anymore then...

Yep, they're Progressive Suspension, the modern successor to S&W. From what I've heard from other American classic bike riders they're very good value for a "classic", that is, one that isn't ridden hard or often. These particular ones are made "offshore", which doesn't automatically mean China any more but usually means quality control can be a bit dicey. They apparently do a more than fair job of keeping the wheel in contact with the road surface when new, but nobody knows how long that will last. And using them for spirited riding (like what a Jota demands!) is probably asking for trouble.
Cheap enough to grab a set and see if they work, though, might be all you need.

Hello chaps ive done a bit of reasearch, for the money the yss's are the go

http://www.yssusa.com/series-g.html

The difference between the 362s and the 366s is 12 and 16 mm shaft, me im thinking that the 16 would obviously be more durable, any comments on the 12, its about $300 difference

see above

Hey Cosi,

Bear in mind that is the us site.. Aussie site is gonna be dearer.. No matter you should be able to buy from them anyway. Or not.. Some mobs are funny like that...
If you look, the price diff is made even less if you add the compression clicker adjustment which the 366 seems to have standard..
Pretty good value either way. The only question remains are they gonna last for years, or weeks. What with the high mileage/ speed, and crap roads we Aussies have to deal with..

Ciao,  Ross.

So I decided the old S&Ws were crap, so I rang Ikon today to express my disappointment with the K1100 Ikon shock I currently have, "so convince me I should go with Ikon again for the RGS" I said. Explained I had to have the spring wound up to stop it bottoming out then I had to have the damping on full to stop it pogoing, they politely asked how much of a fat bastard I was, 110kg, oh they said what you have won't work. Had you said you were that weight when ordering we would have changed the valving and oil weight, well I said had you asked, I would have said.....blah de blah.

So I asked about the argy shocks, they said they would build a pair with the right springs and damping for me at no extra charge so ordered them :)  Will report back when they get here next week!

Many years ago we ran a company that did stuff to allow Windoze NT to communicate with Unix systems, One of the marketing lines we quickly rejected was Connecting Unix and NT...... Not sure why they didn't like it :)

Hello all.

these were made to order by the friendly Dutch (Bitubo) importer. Moneywise the same as Ikon`s (about 360 Euro`s). No hassle to fit, work fine.

Regards, Melle

Melle,

Been using the Bitubos for some time now, started leaking after about a year.....  Revised sealing seems to have cured it, drizabone after 2 further years of use.

As mentioned before, I can't stand the screwy preload, prefer the clunky ones, especially on twin shocks and I can get them at dealer price through a mate.. Will see how they go :)

Rather than start a new thread, I've resurrected an old one.

Hey Drikko, time must pass slowly in the parallel universe known as Queensland. It's now been about 2? years in the real world and you haven't reported back. What did you think of the Ikons, and are they still working OK after a couple of years? (sorry - one week in your time).  :D

I'll eventually need a half-decent set of shocks for my RGS based track bike. I probably should fit something that looks suitable for the pre-1982 period. Just wondering what you thought of the Ikons.

I have a rather optimistic view that most race tracks are reasonably smooth, so you don't need anything super-fancy in the suspension department. As long as they keep the rear tyre away from my arse and do an adequate job of damping, they should be OK. If I buy something super snazzy with heaps suspension adjustments and doohickeys to play with, I'll only confuse myself.
