+1 Especially surface finish tolerances. Smoothing out peaks [gently, to aviod hot spots] was part of the running in process. Now done to a far better (and more function-appropriate) degree by manufacturing operations, before the parts are mated.I suspect a lot of the gentle run-in theory comes from the old days of plain shell bearing crankshafts in cars, when materials and tolerances perhaps weren't as well controlled as they are now.
