While it works for steel and iron, and have used it myself. I seem to recall, molasse, eats aluminum.
I may be wrong though, I was once before.

Molasses seems like a messy and sticky option. Probably not so cheap either (dunno, I've never bought molasses). It works because it's a weak acid. You could also use Coca Cola if you want to, but there are cheaper options. Buy a 1kg bag of citric acid crystals on ebay for a few bucks and dissolve it in about 20 litres of water.
