Slow cranking

Hi laverda collective ,can anyone tell me if the starter is easily removed without stripping the side cover off on a 1977 1000 motor please,
Really slow cranking with new battery.

pretty sure 'yes' if you have a key (hex) long enough to get to the bolt at ~ 7 o'clock when viewed from the LH side

2 bolts and it should move clear

I made a special tool by cutting the bend off an Allen key and welding a long T-bar handle onto it. You need to poke it through from the other side of the bike.

I recently pulled my starter motor out and gave it a clean, definitely worthwhile, although there’s a few other things to check too. Like the big cables, positive and earth, and their lugs. Not to mention the relay.
Any of those can make the motor run slow

Great tip i will give it a go and does it all go back in ok without rembing cover ?

Thanks really appreciated and are you the man to ask about dmc 1 advance curves,seem to remember reading one of your posts regarding how to set up depending on what motor and tune you have ?

I haven't had much to do with DMC units. The man to ask is Piet. I believe he was involved in the development of them. He's very knowledgeable about them anyway.

The optimal advance curve for your bike will depend on the state of tune of your engine. As a general rule, higher compression engines require less advance than lower compression. I don't recall whether your bike is a Jota or a 3C(L), but the recommended DMC curve would probably be different.

Jota spec motor,4c cams and high comp pistons, so I was told. And thanks for your valuable info

With regards to the starter motor if it’s a Bosch item check the brush holders are in place and secure.,The rivets holding them in place tend to loosen and allow the brushes to move out of position.Mine was slow to turn over and only 1 brush was making contact, the other was at 90 degrees to the armature.

My DMC was installed in '94 and doesn't look at all like the DMC2, it has dip switches rather than a rotary one for maps and setup. Does anyone have the installation/user manual for these? There's no writing on it I can see, they were engineers not marketeers I suspect :)

I’m on curve 7 but think there’s too much advance so going to try something with less advance ,when I got the bike it came with a new Witt dmc1 kit that the previous owner tried to fit but had mess things up,also he said that the motor had jota pistons and 4c cams and have confirmed the cams after checking valve clearance
