Piranha Brother 2 said:Brilliant, Jo! The elec bike for the missus was the key I suspect.
Each of my three trips to Europe I have boxed my bike. A Miyata steel road racing bike with rear panniers the first time and Emily on he old Giant Sedona steel bike - my idea of 'climbing' gearing was a 42-52 chainring with a 12-25 cassette!
When I worked for Lonely Planet - travel guide publisher (nearly 12 years) I was commissioned to co-author their Cycling Italy guide and took my MTB-as-touring bike. Nice being paid to ride!
Lat trip was the lightweight carbon roadie for the Alpes and Pyrenees.
Oh, forgot that the last thing I did for Lonely Planet - before my job as a linguist became redundant - was ride for three weeks from Khartoum in Sudan, to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia as part of a 'recreational' LP relay in the Tour d'Afrique from Cairo to Capetown. Ethiopia is all about mountains and altitude - rarely dropped below 2000m for two weeks and peak at 3400m!
Sorry to everyone for the hijacked thread - should probably have done it via a PM!

I wouldn't mind getting my pushie out for a trundle around, but weather has been abominable. It's cold, and blowing about 40kts with rain squalls at the moment.

Yes, LP was a great place to work, even though my day gig was behind a desk working with about 185 languages, translators, transliteration systems, computer script generation (how do you produce a Mongolian Phrasebook???!!) ... and all that kinda stuff! Agree about discovering the world for yourself, but access to info about transport (if nothing else) was worth the weight of the books.
