do you really think these kind of bikes could be included in the list?
At that time every manufacturer was following that kind of market, the "on the road" was selling, just current fashion. Look at the Norton (messages above), change seat and handlebar and you have the commando. Someone mentioned honda, kavasaki and other, following I provided to collect them in a single picture. They are all the same, we could disapprove the category but, actually, I cannot recognize the ugly, the freak at most.

I think Yamaha 650 Custom was the first of them.

I guess you are referring to virago 535, right?
As you can see it is a standard design, all bikes in this category are all the same, is it worth recalling'em?

Admittedly that Buell is a shocker, however I can recall, back in the day when the CX500 came out that most/all of my mates scoffed at their advertisements in the press, yet a few went on to buy them and then sing their praises. At the time the rest of us enforced a version of social distancing (sending to Coventry) and, even after we 'forgave' and let back into the fold, the general consensus was that you never trusted anyone once they'd defected to the 'dark/unfashionable' side. I had an XT500 at the time which was still considered to be on the 'rightous' side of the tracks in those days... 8) 8)

I had a Ducati 999 that got a lot of bad press for its looks, I fell off of it and and almost wrote it off, it was only 6 months old. A company called Ultimuira rebuilt it and offered to do a paint job as the insurance was paying.
I went for Xerox race scheme it totally transformed the look of the bike unfortunately i don't have any pics

Again Kawas latest Versis, ugly as all Kawas

When I bought my 2008 BMW R1200RT I thought it was really ugly.  Twelve years later, I still think it is really ugly but it has done 152,000 miles with out breaking down and still runs like new.

As for the series II Mirage TS, after 25 years of ownership, I still think my 1982 TS is still ugly with all the body work. I had it for maybe two weeks before all the bodywork came off and am still happy I removed it.

As Paul says, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 42 years ago a good friend sold his gorgeous 650 BSA and bought an oily Triton. I said to a mutual friend I thought the Triton was ugly. Unfortunately he then told this to my mate, and even now we're still not on great terms because of it. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

Insectoid  :D
Excellent word to describe the fashion trend with a lot of modern bikes.
I agree with your aesthetic opinion. My Benelli Tre-K is a bit angular and ugly. Not quite as insectoid as its TNT brother though.

'Insectoid' is excellent! I call them 'Transformers' - those kids toys that convert from a vehicle into a crazy robotic monster.

All very subjective; agree that modern styling is 'insectoid', don't really want to ride something that looks it's just crawled out ok a War of the Words movie.
For me the ugliest bikes on the road are Harley 'Baggers', how anybody could ride one and call themselves a motorcyclist is beyond me.
