Tyre choice advice

I was over at Pendine a couple of weeks back walking the dogs, some of the old guys in the South Wales VMCC talk about just rocking up on their Bonnies or Commandos in the '70's and going for a blast.

Pendine beach has also been used by the RAF to test an Airbus A400 landing, hope this beast doesn't blow a tyre, at least it has many more wheels

Starman, I also have a drum brake SF and live in the Beacons. Maybe hook up some time for a ride?

A little more I think, they let me slide on payment till it arrives. I Will let you know. It's a bike shop I have used for 30 years, a couple of years back it was sold to a new bloke. The original arrangement was to order the tyre, pull the wheel at home and drop it off, next day you just paid and picked up the wheel with the new tyre fitted. It's a bit confusing now as Marty works there as a Mechanic and somehow they just assumed he would fit the tyre to the wheel in his lunch time for free. And I had no idea that was happening. I had to make it clear that I didn't expect anyone, the shop or Marty to not get paid at the correct long-term cost for their time. So for the last 2 tyres fitting was free, we will see this time. BTW I love Marty doing this, he knows his Borrani shit.
Ahhh....... I meant tyre width wise Vince, my apologies I should have put in these (mm)

OK, it's the 140 I use. It measures out at 135mm on a 3-inch rim, slightly pinched but I haven't noticed any handling issues. That's 2.5mm on each side, 3/5th of fuck all. And with the chain guard moved over by using the other side of its mount at the front it clears it ok as well

Hello Robin, sounds like a plan mate! I’m near llantrisant, the beacons is my first choice for a ride, great roads all around there. Got a pic of your bike?

I've ridden on both. One was my SF1 (later type) and I had to get rid of it before I killed myself. I ended up off the road in the Adelaide Hills thanks to that brake. Maybe it wasn't set up perfectly, but I needed something that didn't require that much attention when I was young and poor. I always centred the backing plate when refitting the wheel, which always helped a lot. Replaced it with a Yamaha TZ 4LS and used that for many years - brilliant, but too fragile - went through two of them. With discs available and virtually trouble free it was a no-brainer to upgrade.

Rebuilt an SF a few years back that had the early type like yours - it had great bite on initial application but when you wanted more the lever came in but the rate of deceleration didn't change. Had to take evasive action to avoid running into the back of a turning vehicle (the car I was behind saw it late and flipped lanes very suddenly, leaving me exposed). Discs would have pulled me up without problem. Of course all this depends on how hard you want to ride/brake. My take is that if the brake can't lock the front wheel it isn't up to the task. Just my opinion and many will disagree.
I take your point, and tend to agree that if it won’t lock the front wheel it isn’t up to the job, now, as my SF is my first laverda, (and I love it!), i can only judge based on my bike. Perhaps I’m lucky, because my front drum will howl the front tyre, indicating it’s not far off lockup, so I’m content!
ive no idea what brake shoe linings are fitted, maybe they are feredo? I always used to rate them highly.
I always liked the aesthetics of the front drum, and I fully accept that the twin disc is superior in every way, im just going to ride my SF accordingly.
being a senior at 64, my crazy days are probably behind me !
i competed in enduro’s, did a bit of clubman roadracing, the odd observed trial, but nowadays I’m content and grateful to be out on the bike, enjoying the roads, scenery, and the company of good like- minded mates.
i still grind the pegs and push the envelope, just not all the time anymore!

incidentally, I’m looking for a match to the SF gear shaft splines for my rearsets build, if anyone out there knows of a stubby lever that suits( from another manufacturer) I would be very grateful for the info.
cheers all, Marty.

Sounds like your setup is fine and more than fit for purpose, Marty.

I'm not sure but think the Laverda spline is fairly specific - think your best bet is to post in Wanted for a broken twin or triple gear lever and modify accordingly. Alternatively Wolgang will have a suitable new/used replacement.

Hi Marty, very close, I live near Pontsticill. I could lock up my rear with the original asbestos shoes, bur now it has been relined it isn't so harsh. Front has never been as good, whether the difference between back and front is the leverage/muscles or the brake is hard to know.

This is my SF at the Bwlch a couple of weeks ago.

I'll send you a PM.

Is Wolfgang a spares dealer?
im so new to laverda ownership, steep learning curve, can you share his contact details?
thanks mate!
marty.

Hi all,
re- my rearsets project on my SF750, regarding the stubby gear-lever I need for the linkage, i have stumbed upon a perfect match for the laverda gear change shaft splines, it is from a Ducati 749, 2003 to 2006, that I found on eBay.
hope this is usefull to other SF owners contemplating a similar project.
cheers, Marty.

I used the foto of the lever on eBay, zoomed in to make it larger, and using a vernier calliper on the image on my iPad, I worked out the spline diameter by scaling from the clamping bolt hole which I knew was 6mm, and then I counted the number of splines, it all seemed to match, so I took a chance and bought it (£15)
tried it on the shaft yesterday and it fitted perfectly!

Sounds like the scene from Bladerunner where Harison Ford blows up the reflection in the mirror on the video he is watching. Clever
