Tyre choice advice

Been using S11's on my 3C for years. Also have a pair on the Jota at present, due for replacement.
Both with tubes, no issues whatsoever. Good mileage too.
My local tire guy reckons they are being discontinued, so I'll switch to BT46's.

650's numbered 42 in total, many of them with higher serial numbers than you would imagine, it is a misconception to say that the factory made 42 of 650's and then started making 750's.
JLO's webpage has 1571 listed as the highest number for a 650, so far, there are a lot of 650's in France.

what number is yours Paul M?
CLEM

52 Clem, not 42. As you know from bits of production records that have survived, 750s were made alongside the 650s practically from day one.
" Ooops, we should have made it a 750."
More than half the production of 650s was sold in France. Couturier, the importer was very active. I once knew of the whereabouts of about 25 of them.

Mine is 1567. Now number 2 on the restoration list. Tank and side panels are already painted a nice lurid bottle green.

Paul that is a fabulous colour! Please post a foto of the bike when it’s finished?
are those threaded bosses on top to mount a luggage rack similar to ‘60’s triumphs? Was that an original fitment only on the 650’s?
marty.

Yes to all.
Photo of the finished bike will come but will be a couple of years, there's a 125 Sport waiting to climb on the work table to be pulled to bits. (plus all the rest to maintain and ride the bloody things)
650s and 750 GTs did have a chrome tank top rack.

The eagle eyed will have noticed the two tabs on the back of the tank for the springed mounting clips rather than the later single tab for a rubber strap.

spring clips sounds like a better solution than the rubber strap
The rubber strap was broken on my 750SF when I got the bike, the replacement I bought was so stretched when fitted to the bike that I didn’t think it would last long, so I have used zip ties as a temporary measure until I think of a better solution.
is rubber strap breakage a common problem?

Yes, they don't last very long. It would seem that recent rubber gear ages very quickly.
Alternatives are quite feasible. I think that I've had a battery strap to fix the rear of the tank on my SF2 for 30 years. It's still holding out. Just.

Is that 4mm clearance at the side of the tyre, or radial clearance between the tyre and mudguard?

A tyre will change its aspect ratio at speed. The diameter will "grow" a small amount due to centrifugal force. I dunno how much in mm or % that growth would be (probably depends on speed rating) but it's possible that 4mm is insufficient radial clearance at the centre of the tread.
Not at the centre it is tight on the shoulder. Going to try putting some masking tape around where it is tight and check if it rubs any off as the tyre may not be that true and cannot spin the wheel on the centre stand

Any ideas what the clips/ springs look like? Mine has the hooks as well.

There's a metal clip that hooks on the prongs at the back of the tank and a spring that attaches to the top frame tube, either side.
There might be a diagram in the early parts lists, and I might have some on a GT I have that's awaiting restoration in 2031, or thereabouts.

Paul

These are the clips on mine.
The springs are very strong and I usually need a thin long blade screwdriver that slide in the top curve to lift on / off. (Just happened to have them all apart while cleaning the air filter🤪)

 I wonder why the springs are forward on one, and rearward on the other?

I'm coming up later this week Peter. I'm spending Thursday and Friday at the Prawn Farm

👮‍♂️o_O What are you a bloody copper.
One clip comes off the spring easily and I just put them quickly together for the fashion photo shoot!! :ROFLMAO:
I will ensure all ready for inspection by end of the week!!

All right then, it's a feasible excuse..... I'll buy you a beer and discuss all manner of springs;)
