Way back in about 1980 I made a set of panniers and a luggage rack for a trip around Australia on my Kawasaki Z1. I made the panniers from thin plywood with a layer of fibreglass mat over them. They looked a bit crap but were pretty strong. I dropped the bike once during that trip and it just put a little scrape on one corner of a pannier. The bike wasn't damaged at all - saved by the panniers.
I don't have those panniers now, but I can't remember what happened to them. I probably gave them away when I sold the bike.
