One of only two Hondas I've owned. The other was a CB500 bought from a friend to help them out.
Maybe this CX500 is not the best bike Honda ever built but it got me 50,000 kilometres around Oz in 6 months, the last three months of 1988 and first three of 89. A sort of figure eight from Brisbane to Cape Tribulation. Out to Alice, down to Sydney, Melbourne, around to Adelaide, across the Nullarbor round to Esperance, Albany, Perth up to Broome, Darwin through the centre back to Adelaide and cross to Sydney back to Brisbane where I sold it back to the shop I'd bought it from. Only lost a few hundred dollars in the deal as they couldn't believe I had gone far as I'm just a POM.
It was basically reliable. A leaking rusty fuel tank cured with soap and 'Duck' tape unto I could get to a friends house and solder the hole closed. A set of clutch plates, it had 60,000 on the clock when I bought it. At least five tyres as I remember it, a regulator and battery.
Still dream of that trip. I think back I did a lot of growing up and meeting some good people. Drank a lot of beer and learnt a taste for Bundaberg Rum OP.
I wonder what it would be like to do the same trip now?

You’d need a boat at the moment!
Cape Trib to Alice would be via Sydney to to Port Augusta to Alice because North Western QLD is currently under water!
