500 basket case

You could start on Ebay. There currently is, or has been, most of those parts on there recently.
This guy has barrels & right side engine cover in need of a clean up !.

New right side engine cover.

Sprocket cover from Germany.

Fuel tank from Germany.

And you're going to need a decent gasket set !

Yamaha TZ350 is an easy replacement front mudguard.
Thanks for that I’ll take a look ……does no one have a mould of the genuine front guard?

The tank is probably repairable but when it was sprayed the sprayer didnt mask the pet-cock or filler!!? so the tanks full of spray. Was the Monty head different to the road bike head or are they both rocking horse? I’ve got an option of cutting away the damage from the sprocket cover portion (race bike style) again until one falls in my lap. I can heat beat and weld the side cases also. Do you know who has the side panels for sale as they are really beyond a repair. Thanks for your comments I’m learning availability ad costs gradually.
I have 2 sets of side panels for sale. One set is original and the other set is carbon fibre.

Send me a DM for more details.

Keeping it simple can you 500 lads tell me on a 1-10 scale on difficulty of finding and a basic figure £ cost of the following parts
1 Tank.
2 Cyl head
3 Cylinders
4 Side pannels
5 Front gaurd
6 Sprocket cover
7. Ignition cover.
8. Clutch cover.

Much appreciate any advise on this project, opinions welcome as to where I go with this bike. I thinks I’ll parade it and if it’s not to much agro I’d like to register it so I can wiz it round my village on a Sunday morning triggering the Karen’s and inspire the young lads ( and lassies), not to mention the local bike nights that have never had the pleasure of a Sito exhaust system.
Pretty much 7-10 for the lot...

Be aware there are 2 types of clutch cover for the balance-weighted engines. Count the fixing bolts.

Depending on what you need, I may have a clutch cover for you, as well as a sprocket cover.

Different front mudguards have been used. Either flat sided that bolt on to the stanchions, or curved sides that go part way round the stanchion & are held in place with jubilee clips.
Search Google Images for Laverda Montjuic & you will see the variations used. Some have a flat top profile & some follow the curve of the tyre.

I’ve got the guard that is held on y a jubly, it’s had it virtually in 2. I’ve contacted someone h who makes race fairings to see if he want to make me one, do you think there’s any demand for front gaud (jubly type) as I might have get a few.?

Great info save me finding out the expensive way. I’m interested in all parts listed then it will be down to price the way I go with this thing.thanks

Apart from a genuine Monty cylinder head, which is like rocking horse shit, most of the rest should be reasonably straightforward to source. Looking at some of the ‘hammered’ items, admittedly from a distance, I would have thought most are repairable.
Tank, fairing, side panels and mudguard are all available new at not excessive cost, and Zane sprocket covers fit 500s.
Where are those parts available new..tank, fairing side panels ect. Thanks

😬so what’s the plan when everyone starts needing one
There is no plan !! All the machinery to make them was scrapped !
There are guys out there who have emptied their safes & bank vaults of gold & valuables, to put their stash of Lav 500 cam chains away safely !
The later Zane bike used the same chain that was 2 links longer, Monty 112 links, Zane 114, so even Zanes are being plundered for cam chains !
Just check the chain that's in your bike. Do you have a workshop manual before you even begin ??!!
Take cam cover & right side engine cover off & set the engine up on the correct timing marks. Adjust cam chain tensioner to obtain correct degree of chain vertical deflection as per the manual. If your tensioner bolt only screws in a short way then you can assume it's not too stretched. There more adjustment it needs = the more it's stretched.

Little correction: 500, Atlas 600 and Zane 650 have 112 links; Zane 750 has 114 links.
Those 114 for the 750 is one link to much. Actually you need a half link so you have 113 links (unfortunately they don’t exist in this size)
Most of 500 - 650 chains are in good/usable condition and can be used again.
Because the 750 chains are is to long the extensioner needs push further, the chain scraps a little on aluminium and wears out as a result. So the problem off not getting those chains is for 750 the biggest.

Great info, I want to strip and check the engine before I even attempt to run it, I haven’t got a manual, I will buy one when I see one, I prefer and proper manual than a pdf but if I can download a manual to get me started I’d do that. I’m thinking it’s probably not getting done this summer so I’ll be taking my time. As with most old bike I’m finding out every time I look over the old girl it’s got some wrong bits….. ie the bloody carbs are 34s that explains why there flapping on the manifolds so 32s need adding to the blinking list (unless they work)!!?

This is exactly the info I need or needed before I bought it. But I got it now so I guess unless one is willing to pay the big bucks we have to start somewhere. Trouble is I bought it to use and this cam chain lark is making that no so viable unless your one of those hoarders with a few chains……if you could convince someone to part with one what sort of money do they command?

Don’t worry to much, unless you ride more then 30.000 km a year.
There are lots of broken down 650 engine with other issues then the chain.
I have three used but in good condition chains for spare. Yes I hoard them but with three 650’s and four 500/600 engines in use I am ‘allowed’ to do.
Probably your chain is as good as my spare’s.
Just build your bike and enjoy it. Maybe you find a spare chain somewhere later, that is soon enough.
You probably won’t need it anyway.

Converting the engines for other chain, perhaps similar timing chain than triples has, 06B but extra strong like Iwis?
Centre part of the crankshaft to be redesigned and manufactured, new camshaft sprockets?

Is this approach ever been considered? Would be very expensive indeed. Longer batches at ones would somewhat take the price down. Also need to check the lengths of available chains.

Yes!

Sounds fair, think I’m overthinking it but I’m green as grass with these bikes but that’s changing hour on hour. Thanks for the info.
