So if we had 2 bikes identical in every way one comes with a slater certificate the other just a good replica…….what is the differenchal in value. Just the figure between the 2 bikes. All opinions welcome.

If you had 2 identical bikes, one with certificate & one without, that only really tells you one is an actual Slater import, the other is not. If everything is the same externally, then it's going to have to be a look inside at the cams & pistons. But since all the parts that went into making a Monty were either already fitted to other models in the range or readily available at the time, ( some Mk1's became Mk2's just by changing the fairing & seat unit, the permutations are many ! ), the only real difference is the £150 Slater certificate. But regardless of if all the parts are correct, it's gonna be about how much someone cares about that piece of A4 paper !!
I have an early 1977 Alpino that a previous owner had gone the whole hog & built themselves a Monty copy from it, including cams & pistons. So they are out there !! Thankfully the guy I bought it from had never peeked inside the engine & was unaware of the internal upgrade !! I didn't pay Monty money for the bike, & finding the go faster cams & pistons inside was a pleasant surprise !!
As mentioned earlier in this thread, there's a lot of look-a-likes out there being sold as the genuine article, & depending on a buyer's knowledge of these bikes would dictate the price they'd be prepared to pay ?
It's gonna be whether you have someone who's always wanted one but doesn't know much & will just pay coz it looks the part, or Mr. Knowall who has done his homework, knows every last detail, will pick up on every little issue & kick you in the nuts on the price !! Welcome to the World of Monty !!
Any other additional paperwork you may have for the bike is always helpful though.

There was a guy, whose name I currently forget, paid a fortune to build a Barca replica with a Keith Nairn 270 crank, somewhere north of 15k GBP I believe, and that’s subsequently been touted around for less than 10k.
A genuine Monty was fetching 10k + GBP not so long ago, but the prices have probably dropped back below 10k. A good Monty ‘replica’ is probably in the 6-8k GBP region, working on the basis you can by an Alpino S for less than 5k and convert it to ‘Monty spec’ for less than 2.5k by doing the work yourself. Even if you paid someone else to do the work you still wouldn’t get any more money for it (note example above).

As I understand it, true Montys were based on the F500 and therefore should contain a close-ratio gearbox. Just a matter of a short test ride to find out, the same applies to SFC replicas.

CR SFC boxes are few and far between, hardly any replica builder goes to the effort and expense fitting one of these. Without a CR box, much of the light crank advantage is simply wasted... may just as well ride an Alpino or SF2.

All that effort just for noise and uncomfortable ergonomics?

I was out and about during the Manx on my series one F500 this week. Despite all the discomfort mentioned above Piet it still left a smile on my face. I also had loads of people around the course excitedly pointing at me to their friends as I passed their vantage point. 🙂

Andy,

My comment was aimed at the conversions of perfectly usable bikes into barely ridable torture instruments.

In ten years we'll all be complaining there's no decent originals left...

Doubt many replica SFCs get any meaningful treatment in the motor department, Piet, so unlikely they'll have a light crank to be complemented by a CR box  But I definitely agree with your end comment.
