BEARS Australia 2024

The GS1000 I built and which did a fair bit of winning here in the South Island used a 4.5in rear. Our pre 82 rules say 5in max.
I didn't think it made much difference at the time. But as it got developed to somewhere around 140hp the rear tyre life got shorter...
Your pic of the 160 rear, looks like ours but after only 3 laps....
The owner's parked it but if it ever comes out again it's obviously got to have a 5in squeezed in to use a 180 tyre.

Tyre wear is very interesting ! Must be some influence from the difference between the pure slick and the semi treaded slick ?
We use Pirelli race tyres and Matt prefers SC1 compound, it is not possible to source a 160 x 17" SC1 Slick in Aussie anyway though we can source 160 slicks in SC2 compound
Tread has nothing to do with the wear, the difference is the width of the tyre contact with the track between the 160 and the 180
At a guess as it is hard to measure the 160 would give us something like 15-20mm contact width whereas the 180 contact would be double that

Our bikes have no issue spinning up the 160 rears especially when leaned over coming out of a corner as the gear ratio changes the further you lean
But now with the 180 no more spinning, just drive out of the corners thus not tearing the tyre up

Been out of signal range. Great weekends racing. And super bloody lucky to keep the Mule and the Thruxton upright after that little kiss. I'd also be very interested to know what that 750 Duke donk is ... certainly not a bevel!

Gonna make life very interesting having that on the grid for the season. Noone was a match for McGee on the Bob Brown Pantah back in the Thunderbikes era - Martin Hone on the RGS with the F1 motor had no chance.

Amazing difference in wear on those tyres. Spinning out of corners just rips the 160 to shreds - can't be good.

Whilst I agree having a larger contact patch will provide more grip, the treaded tyres will generate more heat compared to full slicks and that does effect tyre wear does it not?

Only relevant if your local regs say treaded tyres only. From experience I'll observe that if you're spinning up a 160 slick, a 180 treaded tyre won't last long. Moving a big pre 82/post classic onto slicks from treaded rubber is probably the best performance improvement for the money that you can do.

What he said? Interested to know what 750 Duc is that quick.
fucked if I know, all Ducati's look the same to me, I have never progressed past admiring 1981 Laverda Jota's
Gave up following bikes after they came out, best Laverda ever made

I know it is a 750 and it has two cylinders, is painted red and weighs 140 kgs
Does that help identify it ?

Nup.
4-valves, 2-valves, watercooled, air-cooled, injected, carbed ... 748s, 750 F1s(?), Pasos. I saw the Mule pull away easily from a 916 onto the straight at Broady.
140 kegs is a fukn light bike! Certainly gonna make the racing a lot closer this year.

Not sure what the regulations would allow in subject BEARs class wrt engine and frame. Latest aircooled 2V Ducs had been the 1100 cc Monsters - guess it would not be to complicated to adopt one of those to a period ok TT frame.
