Boots

After being sick of black, die-running when wet, cold hands I bought a pair of Belstaff waxed cotton over mittens, absolute crap. They were waterproof but the palms were so waxed I couldn't squeeze the bars tight enough to turn the throttle, to much lube. They also did these as Galashers for boots, same stupid thing. Too slippery to walk in.

Bought a pair of over gloves from Andy Strapz not too long ago. They seem to work pretty good, but if any moisture gets inside probably makes things worse..... (bloody expensive though)

I know it's hard to believe but I have a set of those as well, they come in a clip-lock black plastic bag and they sitting on my desk. Never used them. I bought them years ago just before The Millennium Drought and it never rained to try them. After that, I bought a pair of Dainese Gortex winter gloves that worked great till I got stuck at Bathurst following the Minivan with Piero Laverda in it to tour Mt Panorama race circuit. We got smashed by a massive thunderstorm and I managed to pull the gloves inner out and it took 40 minutes to get it back in. Bloody wet weather gear.

These are excellent, I never travel without them. Good in cold weather as well.
You’ve got to have the perfect size and make the right decision about under/over your sleeves…

I used to have a pair of tough plasticised (PVC?) mittens that would go over my normal riding gloves. I don't remember where I got them, but they must have been some kind of industrial PPE. Probably for handling chemicals or some kind of wet slippery things. They had a kind of rippled sticky rubber pad on the palms that was good for gripping the throttle, even when wet. They wore out over 30 years ago.

A vague memory has just surfaced that they may have had something to do with the fishing industry. For hauling cray pots in arctic weather perhaps. They were the best over-gloves I ever had. 100% waterproof, but I've never seen another pair like them.

My old man wore a set of oilskins when he sailed round the horn on his way to England in 1938, bit like these.

Who remembers the sheepskin-lined flying boots that were the cutting edge of motorcycle footwear 50 years ago?

They were warm when dry, but that's about the limit of their beneficial features. No armour and no real structure to them, so they'd go out of shape pretty quickly if you walked around in them. They were hygroscopic too. If you rode past a puddle on the side of the road, they'd try to suck it up.
Yep, had a pair of them for years from the late 60's. No other decent boots seemed to be available anyway and crash consciousness was not a part of my being in those days.

I got a lot of riding gear from Army Disposal Storie, usually complete crap. Jackets that you froze in, flying boots, great coats etc.

"military boots may keep your feet dry on your bike Clem, but try doing a river crossing in them"

I am sure that as long as the water didnt come higher than the top of the boots, then they would still keep out the water, Andy.
It reminds me (again) of that wet trip to Denmark in 2006 when Andrea and I got proper soaked and had to ride on for hours on end to get the prebooked ferry at Dunkerque, and return to work the following day (the curse of the drinking classes) when we were squelching up the steps of the ferry, I asked her, how wet were her feet, she said that if she stood in a tank of water, three feet deep for an hour, she couldnt get any wetter

Not surplus or necessarily inexpensive but I have these. Use them in rain and cold. Got this orange color for visibility, come in black also. Has a little rubber squeegee on the left thumb for your visor. Which works. Has a Velcro strap at the wrist and a drawstring with cord lock at the end of gaubtlet. Debate as to wear these outside your jacket sleeve or inside. One way you do not let your arms hang down- keep them up, or let them hang and never raise them above your elbows. Water in vs water out.

Winter time I use silk glove liners, Elk skin gloves and then these covers. Good combo for me. ;)

I have some over mitts a bit like the above with an elasticated inner. I tend to have the gloves inside my over suit and the over mitt on the outside. The elasticated bit is pretty good at stopping any of the wet stuff getting into my gloves.

I keep repeating, I must be an individual. I bought a new pair of Alpine Star Gortex boots and wore them today for the first time. And what did I see, huge numbers of blokes wearing exactly the same boots and all of them boots over pants. The shame, BUT for years I am a pants-over-boot bloke and these new boots have so much armour my pants don't zip up over these boots. I could change the habit of a lifetime, OR take my riding pants to the Serbian Lady and get some as she calls it Stretchy material added to the pants leg bottom zips. The latter I think. It's confusing, I must remember Jacket over gloves and pants over boots. It's tough being an individual.

I'm about to invest in a new pair of boots, the soles of my present ones are holed. The volume of the calf so as to allow trousers over is an important criteria of choice.

I would have bought these boots anyway but I did stuff up by not checking this first. I am always modifying the bike or the bike gear I ware.

I'm not particularly impressed by my "new" Alpine Star Gore-Tex boots. Upper material isn't very durable, shift lever reinforcment patch is worn through on the right boot, wet feet in the rain became the norm after about a year of use.

They're now 4 years old, but haven't seen that much action, with all the distractions from riding that I have had to suffer the last years. ;)

The Dainese I had before that were even worse... started dissolving after about 3 years, threw 'em away shortly after.

Wifey has a pair of Frey Daytona, I'm very impressed by those. Frey offers a repair service, but they show no signs of deterioration after 8 years.

Largely due to the recommendations in this thread, I've ordered a pair of Daytona boots.
I would have preferred to try them on, but nobody locally does them.

Hop over the border to either Trier or Kaiserslautern, Louis is offering good deals at the moment!
