Circumnavigation of Oz take 2

Hey Marty, looks like it is all coming together. I am setting off on July 4 with a couple of other retired cops, one a former scooter pig, on our own Big Lap. We will head up to top of Cape York, then Savannah Way to Darwin, Kununurra, Gib River Road and then hopefully bitumen after Derby. Who knows we might run into you guys, speaking figuratively that is! I did exploration for a mining company for a few years in my early 20s in the Kimberleys, so looking forward to getting back up there.

There is still a chance that a support vehicle will come along to carry the fridge and, more importantly, the espresso machine. I will take my Stelvio as there will be a bit too much dirt for the Jota. Hope your lap goes really well.

:cool: I’m picking up the Scooter Pig terminology, so much better than Evil Kenievel. Cape York is a great ride, depending on road conditions. Take the time and go to Somerset Bay, awesome. Just watch out for crocs.

Thanks for your advice Chris, will follow up. I was wondering if you had much big truck experience before making your recent career switch. I too like driving trucks but that is limited to driving the NSW RFS fire trucks after I retired from the job a couple of years ago.

Had my own truck and trailer doing interstate for about six years. The youngest was only a baby and it was too taxing for my wife. But now....

So yeah, I’m not a complete novice.

Last week was Monday Brisbane, Tuesday off to Melbourne home Saturday morning. Tomorrow, Toowoomba to Adelaide, unload there and pick up in Millicent and head back home through Western Victoria and NSW as a B Double. Next week the same but as an AB Triple.

Get your license upgraded, there is plenty of work to be had.

I listen to the other blokes on the UHF radio complaining about every fucken thing..... I sit back and grin, no stress, no problems ..... and no cranky fucken telephone calls!

Sounds like you got it sorted. I expect there would not be mobile coverage in lots of the places you drive.
 
Telstra has the most, coverage in remote spots and costs the most as well. They insist on this made-up bullshit competition crap but everyone else has fewer towers and coverage. Every second spot we stay at on rides doesn't have Optus coverage in the bush

Vince, I have a Telstra mobile account, pre-paid. $30 per month and that is it. Never get a phone bill and never run out of credit, but I find myself in plenty of places with poor or no reception which isn't always a bad thing.

And Telstra went to shit when they dropped CDMA and went back to 3 -5G. With my old CDMA mobile I was getting signal 80km offshore NW WA. Pick a G, any G, and you get f/a.
 
I'm in Walkerville as I type - S Gippsland, Victoria (only 2 and a bit hours from Melbourne), using Personal Hotspot from my iPhone 6 - Telstra network but through a small community op called better Life Mobile. Telstra have been saying they'll upgrade the coverage here for 20 years but it's abysmal. No cnxn 60% of the time. Just enough to be able to check the Forum this morning.
