Future for Zane bikes?

According to the motto "asking costs nothing" I asked in the german Guzzi forum (Guzzi forum) and got an initial answer:

A) Timing chain V65 (bought at Stucchi in Mandello)
- Endless chain with 82 rollers
- Roll diameter 4.8mm (or 3/16 "= 4.76mm?)
- Roll width 5.9mm
- Distance between rollers approx. 8.0mm (between rollers 3.35mm)
- Total width 13.8mm

B) Timing chain 350/500
- 68 rolls endless
- Roll diameter 6.35mm = 1/4 "
- Roller distance approx. 9.8mm

Maybe we get more informations...

Seems Ducati used the same C107HC chain in the starter system on some of their bikes (I don't know which models). I presume they're in the same predicament as everyone else unless someone has a stock of "Ducati starter chain" somewhere.
You are correct but as was pointed out to me, the duty cycle of the starter chain is very low compared to that of a cam chain so I imagine that the need to replace is very low so perhaps not really an issue for Ducati owners as spares stock will not really have been depleted (my assumption).

Thomas,
It looks as if the V65 chain is the same as that used on the Laverda 350, 500 and Zane twins but the size quoted is not suitable. As I said before, it would appear that Guzzi changed the cam chain over the years as I believe that the earlier smal block engines di in fact use the same chain that we are after. Let's see what today brings.....

I spoke to Gutsibits in UK earlier today just to make sure that I was not talking nonsense and they confirmed that the chain for some of the earlier 500s is no longer available and that same chain is the size that Laverda 500s and Zanes use. Now they could be confused but I have heard the same info from other sources. Gutsibits do have a duplex for some of the small block Guzzis and they also have a single row chain for some of the other small block models e.g. later V50s, V65 but the size of the chain is different and I do not mean the number of links. All a bit confusing but the more I look into this matter, it would appear that this size of chain is a bit special or perhaps I should have said WAS a bit special - shall continue the search though.

Hallo Charles,
can you ask gutsibits, who is the manufacturer of the Guzzi chains ?

wilfried
Hi Wilfried, I did ask that question but the guy on the phone was not able to give me an answer but asked me call back tomorrow when he would hopefully be in a position to give me a definitive answer but I got the impression that they used to stock Regina chains. Will report back when I know.

What about the chinese option??
Miguel
Hi Miguel,
Do you have any info on the Chinese version if so could you please point me in their direction? I would never right them off but would be a bit cautious about them until they have been pretty wel tested for UTS, dimensions and wear amongst other characteristics. The wear one is the most difficult one to characterise, I suspect but chain manufacturers probably have a relatively simple and quick method accelerated process for analysing this?
Adios,

Hi Wilfried,
I contacted Gutsibits and they confirmed that the old, no longer available, C107HC chains were manufactured by Regina. The single row chains that they have in stock for the later models are of unknown origin and are new "old stock" and are now no longer available - perhaps they are just having difficulties obtaining them from their usual suppliers - who knows!! Troubling times for Guzzi owners as well as Laverda owners. It would seem that on the small block Guzzi engines there is no kit to convert from chain to gears although it could possibly be done - not sure how much room there is in those engines. The search continues .............

It's impossible for the Zane bikes to piggyback the Breganze bikes. The old Lavs consolidated their place in folklore in the period before Zane came along, leaving them out in the cold without an identity.

Image wise, Breganze bikes are Lamborghini's and Zane are Alfa Romeos and n'er the twixt shall meet.

Hi,
It was Tom who sourced them. J was just asking hiw the investigation was. I don’t have any infos regarding this option...

Miguel

Will give them a call
Tom
The boys at Teo Lamers have been literally clearing out the attic.
So these chains are 3x NOS Reginas, new in box, labelled C107HC - 112. That means 112 link items, fit for the air cooled small twins. Sorry, not for the water cooled models. All 3 secured and on their way to forum members.

The very friendly guy on the phone @TLM gave me some part numbers for the Guzzi small block timing chains which can be cross referenced to models and production years. As far as he was aware they still carry stock, but obviously not by Regina. Someone must be producing them though. Do we know anyone who knows someone at Guzzi itself, procurement or spares dept maybe?
It may turn out the current chains are different spec though, you see that more often than you'd like in both paper and online catalogues. Always get the actual specs for verification.

Now on with getting in touch with Far East producers who carry the correct spec in their current catalogues.

Tom

Hi Wilfired,
I contacted Gutsibits the other day to ask them about the chain supplier but the guy on the phone stated that he did not know the answer to that and then, when I asked hime to see if there was a name on the chain or box, he said that he could not open a box to look to see if there was a name on the sideplates or box because they had no stock; he also added that the warehouse is in a different part to the sales office -not very helpful. Sorry, I cannot give you that information. I am, along with TomL on this forum lookibng at possibly getting a Chinese chain tested in UK by a 3rd party test house but not sure quite what cost that is likely to be - I hope to receive a quote this coming week.
Adios,
Charles

Hi Charles,
i had the same experience. I called the large Guzzi dealer Stein-Dinse in Germany and asked about the chain dimensions of the small Guzzi engines.
I was told they didn't know the measurements and the chains came in Piaggio packaging. All not very helpful.
But I will contact another Guzzi dealer who has a very good reputation.
Another option is the renowned chain manufacturer CZ Chains in the Czech Republic. A dealer like 3C Moto would then have to inquire.
Wilfried
