Why re-invent the wheel?

Good point, Piet. I don't actually need any, but am, always interested in options if supplies dry up or a serious global pandemic causes serious delays in the delivery of spare parts

My GOD that's a sad looking SF0/1 Mill - You had better be a determined Mechanic to FIX Her ;o)
The only issues have been the collapsed bearing, a broken compression ring and subsequently worn piston groove (I guess that could have happened the other way round) and worn nylon wheel. Play in crank on one side was out of tolerance so it's off for a rebuild at Laverda Scozia.

Seem these days, getting stuff from Europe to Australia is a hassle and can take months (the Laverda calendars are a good example).
Sometimes it's a lot quicker to re-invent the wheel. It looks like an easy part to make.

I received a bicycle part from Wiggle in the UK two days ago, less than a week after placing the order. Came via DHL - impressive. Waiting on another small part from the US, ordered at the same time. We'll see how they compare.

Also waited 2 1/2 weeks for a parcel to NOT arrive from Brisbane - a call to the vendor revealed that Oz Post basically lost track of it (it had a tracking no!!) - arrived two days later. It is a bit hit and miss, it would seem.

A bit OT Quentin - but talking from experience:
Around the hassle which we still have with DHL on the missing calendars we’re told, that only 80% of passenger airplanes are in servic at current. Therefor you are invited to tag all you shipments with ‘premium’ or ‘express’. If you don't, you’ve have to wait - 'normal' shipings will be put aside.

So as far as your bicycle parts came with kind of a ‘premium’ shipping this’d explain, that it came relatively quickly …

It's always the balance between cost and performance. For a single calendar premium shipping would mean cost thrice as large as the production cost had been ...

Cheers

My mother (94) had just broken her beloved glasses frame. Since this model is no longer available in Germany, I searched the Internet and found it in the UK. Etnia eyeglasses frames

For a cheap £ 34.99 and with payment via PayPal, the matter was settled quickly.
After only two days, the part arrived in Germany at the GLS distribution center (partner of UK Post) in Neuenstein/Germany.

Since then, the package has been simmering motionless for 19 days in Neuenstein. It is scanned / tracked every day, several people take care of finding a solution and writing Mails to answer my questions how to find a solution.

The English Post told the sender when starting the shipment that no customs or large forms are required for the small amount.
Here the customs say there are missing documents. But nobody informs the sender and tells him WHAT is missing!

If there are taxes at all, these are so low, that it is insane to deal with the problem for several people over many days.
How am I supposed to explain to my old mother what madness is going on here?

That is truly insane, Thomas. This is when bureaucracy goes completely off the rails. is this the new 'normal' post Brexit?

......is this the new 'normal' post Brexit?

I don't think that this has to do only with Brexit.

Is it normal/sensible that 90% of the crabs from the North Sea are transported to Morocco/Africa for peeling/cleaning and then back again?
Can a package with 31 kg really be sent within Germany for EUR 2.86 (wholesale price) including insurance and tracking, covering costs?

In both cases the answer is NO - but it happens every day !!!!
If we learned to pay for performance based on the cause, then these things would not exist.

Cross-substitution, unhealthy lobbying and nonsensical administrative work are also a problem in Germany.

Sometimes it is interesting to watch how the content of a thread is changing.
If we start now a new Brexit discussion the thread will be closed soon. ;-)

There seems to be something going on in the freight scene worldwide. Three major couriers here are slow, two weeks to get a package from Brisbane to Sydney for example. Even the local couriers are slow, picking up the work from the the above mentioned, I presume.

A worldwide very deadly disease does tend to mess things up.
You cannot even go on holiday where you want and when you want.

As for the quality of a lot of human work....don't expect too much.
