Regulator/Recifier Options 2024

Single bosch gen coil is "good" for 7-8 amps at best ( at some 13.8V above 3krpm ), DMC2 ignition around 3amps dependant on ignition coils installed, could be up to 6 amps.

As it stands the oem retained system runs a near zero power budget, only just manages to provide some charge to the battery. When chronically undercharged, the battery fails early, permanent failure that is. Well known this aspect over the decades. False economy running oem bosch alternator coil or coils, if nothing else you will save on worn out shoes when walking home, or the odd few hundred miles from home... HTH j

But having real time knowledge saves you from a sudden suprise and maybe time to acquire a spare battery to get you home at least, or permanently damaging your stupidly expensive battery and wiring from overcharging. I now bask in the warm glow of 14 volts as I ride about.

It will also let you know that your headlight is draining the battery and you could turn it off if possible. LED headlight? draw much less current? if not uprating the alternator.

Me too, after Willersey I went down to Cornwall. On the way back I wanted the headlight on due to traffic congestion and rain. Next morning at campsite, no starty. DMC2, normal H4 headlight, 1978 1200. No regulator
You need:
A decent charging system
A regulator
a 20W "parking" light or a led headlight
Use the bike every few days.

Having owned a bunch of Hondas with weak RRs, my go-to replacement is a second hand FH020AA mosfet. Not received a duff one yet, not had one function badly or fail early. They just do the job.

Good improvement, though does not address the feeble charge voltage from the oem coil or coils ( only can be done on an original BTZ ) as the HKZ has to retain the exciter coil, per se. Also have to remove the bucking regulator coil. There is the IIS document on single and poly phase alternator configurations in the library here i believe.

After all that you still have a mediocre at best flywheel magnet assembly. Only solution is remove all the original stator plate and flywheel... know the old folk here know all this, restated for the new owners that happen to appear here.

Redax has the ultimate solution, best of all the motor looks original though with a proper 240W or better alternator and RR, with on the button starting digital ignition. There are no shortcuts, remove rose glasses before believing "original oem" electrics are going to get you home... its a lovely motor and deserved of decent electrics... oh and rejetted carbs to make it all a dream come true. $20 eBay digital Voltmeter on the dash. It's better than a surprise in the morning.
I have one but with no option to charge the battery on the campsite, all it did was to alert me to potential 'no starty' in the morning, it got down to 11.9v with engine off. Im getting max 13.9-14.2v with a charged battery and around 4000 rpm

I had a look at the Redax option, it seems to come with new ignition system, can an alternator only upgrade work with the Witt DMC2 ignition controller? Ta

Buggar, has anyone found a combination Battery Pack and air pump for tyres and phone charging. Your battery must have killed a cell really quickly then.

My alternator looks like it puts out just enough to run the bike with a wee bit charging current as you say. This battery got down to 11.9v from fairly fully charged I believe, so depleted the battery to around 30% (28AH battery) in around 4 hours which is bang on for headlight use. Im enjoying this bike immensely, shame I cant go anywhere in the dark but I have seen some great halogen head torches the downhill mountain bike brigade use, next step lol??

Fit one of these.
Far stronger illumination, half the amps fits straight in without modification. What's not to like?

Yes, does it have enough grunt to start a bike with a flat battery, and inflate a bike tyre and seat its bead? I have a power bank that can charge a phone but I wish I had a gadget that could do it all and could connect to a cigarette-type plug on my bike to keep it its function topped up as well. It would be great if it could cook dinner as well, bit of overreach

It was a emergency starter pack that got me going. I keep it charged on the bike for those moments. Its a power bank and torch as well, shame it doesnt hold its charge very well but it is a few tears old but helped me and my mates a few times. does the car as well
