Spoke Hub Rear

Yeah well it's not Eastern Creek or Phillip Island but It's way better than Wannaroo. There is another circuit being built in Albany which is really good judging by the plans, financed by the Gov and Albany Shire. Google Albany Motoplex. But who knows when that will happen.
It's no fun riding on the roads anymore with either of my Lavs and I now prefer riding the BM as it's comfortable riding at the speed limits and mostly I take the off road options where ever I go. So to enjoy the Motodd and SFC the track is the only option now.
Historic Competion MC Club make it really easy to do tuning days and race days where you can buy a day licence to practice on Sat and race on Sun.

It's not just the filth you have to worry about these days. The fucking idiot public with dash cams are now dobbing in "hoons" they think are dangous on the roads. See it on the news often, videos of bikes over taking on double white lines even though there is a clear line of sight to do so.
What ever happen to the Aussie idealogy of don't be a dobber. BM and dirt roads are the way to go. My BM was always my unloved child being a Laverda man through and through. It's now becoming really appealing as the bike of choice when having to go anywhere.

Come to Norway for a bike holiday Rob. Untold miles of barely used mountain roads and you don't need high speedo numbers to enjoy them. Some young bloke here just got done, put out the pic he took of 288kmh on the speedo in his car onto some social media, driving through a tunnel he was, didn't need someone else to film him.

Rob, unfortunately there are those that no longer learn from the past and instead of using a positive “in the future” they are going to be “moving forward”. I’m afraid these slow movers are also the types that have redacted “dobbing” and have “moved forward” turning the negative conitation of dobbing, to a heroism by becoming “whistle blowers”

Too many fucking wankers in the world today.

Yes, every time I even overtake another car in the Skoda I wonder what the occupants are thinking. I'd be VERY hesitant overtaking on double lines even if it was totally safe these days - do-gooders helping keep the world safer with Go Pros are my idea of nasty humans. Take vids of violent attacks in public by all means, but becoming vigilante law-enforcers on the road is a joke.

Having said that, there have been a few incidents when I'm cycling (always respectful of other road users and keeping as far left as prac) where Go Pro evidence would probably result in a conviction for endangerment.

My favorite type of roads Lee. Don't need to go around corners at 100mph anymore like on West Oz roads.
I miss the east coast but I reckon my luck must have been about to run out on the Old road. I hooned that road, had some great scraps with people too. Not long after I left they lowered the speed limit to something like 70km/h. Use to love the sound of the SFC 2/1 reverberating off the rock walls on those tight left handers.
Cops been using social media for quite a while now. You'd think people would learn
The only social media I do is this forum.

Yep, that's the way they'll eventually put us out of business - blanket 60kph speed limits on any back country road - that's anything other than a freeway or a suburban multi-lane road.

Rob, why would you not ride the Motodd around the Collie track or others, are you saying if it doesn't fit into a category or class you can't ride it on the track? There must be an unlimited/vintage superbike class. Wise move with the hubs, I would not feel comfortable on those 45-year-old mag hubs even though they have low mileage, I am basing this on hearing about older genuine magnesium wheels breaking apart, some race clubs will not allow racing on older magnesium wheels. Good luck with your hub/wheel project.

Every year at Spa I worry - but Marnix keeps telling me he hasn't heard of a mag hub failing yet on an SFC. Just what you don't want as you bottom out through Eau Rouge  Must get my spare rims laced up on to their alloy hubs.

You'd have to consider that magnesium was/is an exotic material that was fitted by race engineers for any weight advantage it could offer in the very short term. It was never fitted with a view to long term durability, so I'd be very sus of it after 40 years - that's why I ended up with Larry Strung's rear SFC hub - he refused to race on it, and that was when his bike was only 15-20 years old.

Hey Dave, I haven't actually gone into the regs to see what complies yet but from what I have read and from conversations I'd need to replace the calipers and the carbies. On a race w/e the Saturday is a tuning/ride day where anyone can use the circuit so that would be the day for hooning the Motodd.
I want to start riding the SFC again but I don't want to rego it for the road so a couple of race week ends a year would be the go. Not out to be competitive, idea is not to crash. Besides the rear wheel I'd also want to change out the original tank/fairing, just in case!!

Disguise your SFC as an SF and surprise;) everyone.

I totally understand. My SFC rear hub had some corrosion and I gave it to the engine overhaul shop of the helicopter company I worked with at the time. They sent it out for NDT (non destructive testing) to check for cracks and then it was acid washed, pickled and then painted with the same grey paint used for aircraft magnesium parts. It may not be original anymore ....... but it is solid, safe and looks great. I have no worries for now or for the future.

Not totally sure about the Aussie Post Classic rules - but reasonably sure that like NZ out of period mods are frowned on. Calipers and carbs are areas mentioned specifically in the rules in both countries. NZ certainly doesn't run an unlimited/vintage superbike class.

The pros and cons of running period mag wheels or hubs have got a lot simpler of recent years. Dye penetrant crack testing and even X ray testing has become easier to access. Jim's case where the hubs were tested and re-chromated is pretty typical now
The car guys have been crack testing period rims for years. Pretty sure in some classes they're also age limited.
As an outstanding example, some of you guys will remember the 4 spoke Brabham car mags available in the 70's. They broke up easily when new if kerbed or rubbed on something. Any of those left should be ormaments

It's no fun when wheels break up when on the move, I'm sure!! I've just tossed the carbon laminate Shimano Dura Ace wheels from my velo - brilliant pieces of engineering, super light and super strong - but the rim brakes wore the alloy braking surface and knowing they are very thin, I just had to swap them out - and of course Shimano don't make a replacement rim; you buy complete bloody wheels!! A totally toss, throwing away beautifully made hubs that will last another 40 or 50 years - useless, cos you can't even buy aftermarket rims that will fit the spoke count. Totally pisses me off.

That's reassuring to know Jim
