The Not The Mt Gambier run.

Hmm sounds like the gauntlet has been thrown down Dave
Good write up by the way 👍

Now how do I manage to do Sydney to Darwin a lazy 4400k’s in 3 days 🤔
You've done better pace last trip? 4 days? It's only a mere 3400 from Brissie so 3 days fits :D I would have liked to stop at a couple of places, Winton one. Weird. Really nice people, no crime and the middle of nowhere.

I'm not going to better it on the Perth run. Taking it easy with 5 days for 4000k's, see if there are still oysters on the cliffs at Cape Keraudrin.

I thought most sensible people took clip-ons off and fitted higher bars for long distance rides, not the other way around 🤔

40 years ago, any self professed motorbike rider would have done the same thing. Back then, it was form over function.

40 years later and the Harley guys sport bigger bars than they can comfortably reach, great if you like wasps in your armpits at 100kph.

In any case, it's good for armpit sweating ...
:ROFLMAO:

oh god I must be doing something wrong or maybe a lazy 1200 odd k in a day is not long distance hmm
had Exec bars on once felt like I was riding a dam chopper
clip ons all they way for me baby and yep they’ll be staying on thank you very much esp for the Darwin trip surely that qualifies as a long distance jaunt ? Yes no ? I’ll be doing a round trip so right around 8800 K’s I guess

You know how it's done. Don't stop until tank fill. TLDR, exercise the body whilst riding distance. Ensure the bike is set up to match your physiology. Focus. No mind drift into microsleep.

First time I've done distance with the adjustable clip ons. Set up correctly, there is no lateral left or right twist and pressure on the wrist. The hands fall naturally onto the grips. Allows soft hands on the bars with the body supported by core, thighs and air pressure. Vibration through the throttle hand and finger numbness dealt with by isometric exercise. One or two fingers pressing throttle alternating against the palm whilst the others are worked away from the grip. All of them. Extension. Contraction.

Without sounding like a madman... Riding 12-15 hours with just fuel stops and minimal sleep breaks accomplished with exercise on the exercise bike. Isometrics plus extension exercises on those long stretches of road when no one sees you doing pelvic floor off the seat crunches. For starters.

End result. this 1200 is perfectly set up for my size and weight. The most comfortable long distance ride ever. But yeah, I think Brett knows how its done.

Brett had rain for most of last night, ended up in a sleazy joint somewhere on the Murray.
More rain today.
I asked Dustin, but he says hes back in Canberra,

Clip-ons for me over long distances. But it depends; did the Nullabor at 80 kph, on a chooky, perfect set-up. Came across a bloke doing the trip on a Ducati 900 with clip-ons, he was suffering.

For me the way to do the Nullabore is clipons, sleeping bag on the tank, feet on the pillion pegs, wind it up to the ton [mph] and day dream.
That was years go, can't do the ton anymore. Last couple of times I was on the Nullabore, the annual Border run, I was on my GS1000 BM so upright, but get off the tarmac and follow the old telegraph line where it's possible. From Balladonia head north 200km up a dodgy track to the Indian Pacific rail line and follow that into Kalgoolie. Just need 400km of fuel on board

Same for me, Rob, but a tankbag packed tight with soft stuff. No weight on the handlebars. Did Cairns/Brisbane in a day numerous times like that, but kept to 120kmh or so, there were always radars traps. It is interesting how it feels like you need to steer differently without any weight on the bars.

Suzuki GS1000S. Standard bars, tank bag to lie on. Behind the fairing and fang it. Really comfortable wide seat and over 50mpg even when pushing hard. Adelaide to Kirribili back in the day, 11.25 hours for just under 1400kms via West Wyalong. High speeds must have fatigued the Avon Roadrunner on the front because on the way back a week later the tyre delaminated at about 180kmh 100 clicks west of Mildura. Biggest tank-snapper my life trying to ride it to a stop. Black streaks everywhere courtesy of the flying rubber.
GS1000S hands-down best touring bike I ever owned.

Clearly I will have to reappraise what I thought was the preference for long distance riding, and as someone who has never managed more than a few hundred miles with sporty clip-ons, hats off to you guys that do thousands.
