This weeks joke

This is not a joke, just something astonioshing that I saw today. And it's 100% true.

I went to the cancer centre today to get my monthly infusion of chemicals. While I was in the waiting area, a very elderly lady came in. She was small, very thin and frail looking, hunched over and walking slowly with a shuffling, knees bent kind of gait. Just managing to stay on her feet with the aid of a walking stick. Her white hair was thin and wispy, and her skin was grey and saggy like wrinkled tissue paper. I estimated her age to be about 90. I was silently wondering why she was putting herself through the hassle of cancer treatment when she clearly didn't have many birthdays left anyway. She tottered up to the counter and said to the receptionist "Hello, I'm here to pick up my mother".

Just goes to show, you can't judge people by their appearance. After a few minutes they wheeled her mother out of the radiation treatment room (and I mean that literally, she was in a wheelchair). The mother looked even more ancient. Seems age is no impediment to cancer treatment if you have good health insurance (it's a private treatment facility, so not cheap). I guess the pair of them must have actually been quite a bit younger than they looked. Maybe they'd just lived hard lives. But good on 'em anyway, hanging onto life (and the wheelchair) with both hands. :)

What a classic tale, Cam. Maybe they'd both been through several rounds of chemo and the effects were visible - they might have been 40 and 58!

How's your treatment and side effects going?

All seems to be going according to plan thanks Q. My oncologist is making encouraging noises.

You obviously live in a civilised country Paul. Australia is only partially civilised. The public health system might cover 50% of your medical costs if you're lucky. The rest comes out of the patient's pocket or from private health insurance cover.
I'm not wealthy, but fortunately I have good private health insurance.

Things are always perfectible and the pressure of money is everywhere. We've just celebrated the 75 years of our social security last year, born out of the resistance to the nazi invaders. Some of the money generated by work, and capital comes out of the pockets of workers, employers and banks to finance health, pensions, unemployment etc. In theory, everybody has equal access to health.
The oldest social security systems are German I believe going back to the 19th century.

Yes, we also have good basic medical care in Germany.
But if you have a lot of money or are privately insured (where the doctors can bill more) you can get appointments faster and get better treatment.
Money makes the world go round. 😢

It's a never ending battle against greed.

Social security in France covers both state and private medicine.

The conservatives in Australia have been trying to get rid of the public health system (Medicare) for decades - 'it's too expensive!', they argue. Why should their hard-earned taxes be wasted on the poor or the less fortunate! Well ... 'tax' is a loose term in that lofty world, isn't it - a vast majority of the high enders pay less than the mugs at the bottom of the heap.

Little Johnny was the class clown and general dirty minded kid in class, so the teacher was always careful what she asked for, since Johnny would always come up with something rude. One day, she decides to have the kids come up with a word based on letters of the alphabet, and then use them in a sentence. Starting with the letter A, she asks the class to respond. Of course, Johnny was waving form the back of the classroom, and she avoided calling on him as she went through the alphabet. Every letter she called, Johnny was excitedly waving his hand to be called on. She finally came to the letter U, and she could not think of a dirty word that started with U, so she called on Johnny. Johnny stands up and hollers, Urinate! The teacher, in mild shock, says to Johnny, "that is a good word, now use it in a sentence". So Johnny replies, "Teacher, urinate, and if you had any tits, you would be a ten"!!!
