The Not The Mt Gambier run.

1975 I reckon I did HC to FC on the way from Darwin to Perth - fuelled up then camped at Geiki Gorge. Hours and hours of fun in the bulldust ... lucky it didn't rain - I'm told it got a bit tricky then!

Did a thou today so a hotel room. In Newman. Smells like cocky fumigation.
heres a pic of what we dig up and send to Chynah.

The shit on the tank is badly poured octane booster. Only bought 5, so got some wynns. a tad better placebo.

Found 2 servos with 98. Pt Hedland Puma and Shell Newman.
Last place with the aromatic HC free had 1m concrete cubes right across the front. Ram raider sophistication is earth moving equipment.

The best Octane booster available in Oz is made by Nulon, most bearly up octane at all. Nulon boosts it the most, just a couple of points from where it started, did some research on independent websites, or at least that's what THEY SAID after breaking some pistons a few years back.

Thanks, good to know. I was running 'she'll be right' despite pre trip advice from a wise man. The result is in the pic. Hopin the 98 will clear the centre plug or its a roadside strip in about 30. At capricorn now, 630am and not open. Where's my coffee chill!

I very much doubt that octane booster will clear a fouled plug or make the centre cylinder work harder. I reckon you should fit a new plug or tweak the carby tune.

While Nulon octane booster may have had the best test result as far as lifting the octane rating is concerned, I think a better way to describe it would be the "least bad" rather than the "best". None of them live up to the claims written on the bottle and probably don't do anything useful at all.

I decided not to bother with octane booster years ago. I couldn't tell any difference between using the stuff and not using it. So I put it to the test on a dyno and that also showed no difference with or without octane booster (bike is standard factory Jota specs). We even tried the bike on low octane petrol (91 I think) and the dyno trace was the same (dyno bloke owed me a free session so we played around with a few things).

Octane booster probably won't do any harm to your engine, but it certainly does harm to your wallet. The bloody stuff isn't cheap.

How about avoiding Detination if your highly tuned eg high compression engine gets a tank full of really poor quality fuel on a bush trip. The later model BMWs and KTM Adventure bikes have Dongels you can fit to use fuels in 3rd world countries. I don't use it but after smashing a few ring lans off pistons being put down to Detination, my engine produced 205psi on a compression test back then I was looking at avoiding this happening again. THAT Laverda bloke adjusted the tune and I ride a bit harder and fingers crossed it hasn't happened again.

Well you are again on the money.
It was an imtermittent contact to the centre coil. A little squeeze, problem solved.
Was planning Perth tonight but low beam fail.
Donga at Paynes find. Nice tbone and fire outside.

Just a point on this missed earlier. At Roebuck, fancy BP 98 pump. Filled tank and 10L jerry. Rode off pinging like a bastard. I dont know the 1200CR but plus 10. Riding slow flipped the lid and poured in a wynns thing. Worked but not fully. Im guessing events overlapped with the slowly failing contact on the coil to centre spark.

Well done finding a loose connection to the coil. Intermittent faults are notoriously difficult to track down.

Just guessing here: If your your engine is hot and the ignition isn't firing reliably, you may get a compression ignition of the unburnt mixture on the strokes when the spark misfires. I dunno whether that would sound like pinging though.

Breakfast of champions Dave a cold can and a durry.
Little creatures made right here in Cat country
Little creatures Radiator Stout. Never had it before. Its a chocolate but subtle. 3 of the cans cracked and carameled on the right muffler. BIKE ABUSE! No duzza's Im afraid but carmens do an expresso nut bar full of coffee beans. Will knock over 10 a day to keep things buzzin.

Yep the ping and the gurgle. First worried the gurgle was blowback through the inlets. I've cooked valves! disgrace! Paranoid shit. Flipped the lid and heard the gurgle coming from the pipes. Stop the bike. get all the luggage off. Start at the sotty plug. Clean it. Test for spark. Zero. Work back. Wggle the coil wires. One feels loose. Pull it. A little arcing on the spade. A little squeeze. Start her up. All good.

Diablo, wow, I did not realize the fuel quality was so bad in rural Oz it makes it very mechanically risky for older Laverda hi compression engines, probably disastrous with the original ignition system. What is your bike CR?
Years ago for the South America trip, I prepped my standard 3C (compression ratio 9.0) engine for shit fuel by adding additional base gaskets, a total of 3). My bike ran trouble-free even at high altitudes with fuel I pumped from rusty 44 drums at dubious truck-garages
Is fuel an issue in other regions of OZ?

Thanks for sharing your ride with us, Cheers Dave🍻

As crazy as day-to-day life can be in the USA it is nice to know that many US states still have sensible speed limits. The wide-open spaces of Australia and the straightest roads in the world with little to no traffic surely speed limits can be raised, but still the100kph limits are strictly enforced I just don't understand why this persists do the officials really think 100kph saves lives?
