Building my Jota

I'm 30 years too late to be a model maker. But then again it was an interesting job and taught me many hand skills. Now now CK no coment nessesary!!
Model makers are pretty cool in my book, we wouldnt have so much with out you guys.... movies cars, buildings the list goes on....

Rapid prototyping, as I discovered it way back when, was basically the type of 3D printing that has now become so popular and cheap. The first models I saw were rather crude and rough compared to what my hobby printer can manage today, miles and miles of progress over the last 20-odd years.

All the plastic parts of my printer are printed, the maker has a farm of 500 printers constantly churning out parts for new printers.

I'm just getting the hang of CAD design, I've actually designed, converted files and printed my first bits. Just needed to throw most of what I learnt about technical draughting overboard, CAD is so much more complicated and so much simpler at the same time... totally different.

I was very impressed by Gaudis work when I visited Barcelona in 2006, the inside of the Familia Sagrada was still a huge construction site! Casa Battlo, Casa Mila and the Park Güell were simply awesome.

Halfway there Cam, the cup's no problem... if your coffee break is 5 hours. Reckon the coffee's gotta wait another couple of decades centuries.

I spent 30 minutes with my blasting cabinet this morning , what a difference it makes when you blast things , takes the shine off and makes you feel like you have sunnies on. Check the difference in photo 1 on the ti brake bolt, half blasted half not. The calliper adaptor now fits in more with the calliper . Photo 4 and 5 show how toned down the master cylinder bracket became. Everything is in balance again with the shine taken off! I have said I don’t like shiny and I have to say I’m pretty stoked with the outcome

When going for that sort of detailing, the script on the casing and engine mount bolts and the crappy axle nut spoil it a bit...

This is making me want a 3D printer something bad... I expect that metal deposition printing is going to be a game changer when the cost comes down. The AI software and the organic shapes are fascinating.

I'm curious, what media are you using in your blast cabinet? Glass? Or? It looks to be quite a fine mesh. I'm guessing by the finish that you are using a dry blast process, or is it a wet blast? I recently acquired a small wet blast cabinet and I'm amazed at the finish on cast aluminum parts with 170-320 glass beads. I wonder if you'd find the wet blast finish too polished though.

Thanks for sharing!

Ha! You are so right. Those are all temporary or dummies just while I put gear in and out of the bike. All the good nuts and bolts are sitting ready to go in. Ti wheel nuts , new axles in nitronic 50,well I have made those already , but I may make new ones in Ti as well. I have just finished the front wheel ti wheel spacers too.

Im just so bloody clumsy I reduce the risk of damaging the good gear while I work out what is going where. And what works and doesn’t

Amongst other things disc carriers are also coming off and getting ceracoated in ti
grey.

I’m a little obsessive about tidy ness and what looks right. You have no idea how it does my head in when I have a cupboard full of goodies ready to go on.

i should add as my exhaust is so late , and I’m undecided what to do there , I’m re doing a bunch of things on the jota that I’m not happy with. Hunting down what I want isn’t always easy. Trying to find metric titanium rod ends in europe can be difficult when you need two in m8 and two in m5. But everyday I make progress and I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I’m starting to think I may just use the jota pipes that I have , and ceramic coat them a Matt grey. I’m looking into that already.

Well I just thought I would show off m printed battery tray that Todd made for me, it really is new generation stuff to me, just so light and accurate.
Thanks Toddbattery tray.jpg

What has happened Todd, are the brakes locked on your project?

It's like I've been waiting for Brook to announce she is pregnant for the past two years. (Days of our lives)

Brook is Pregnant!

I have to admit, I got sidetracked with the MV, getting that on the road and life nd work is getting in the way , My intention last weekend was to be back on the tools on the Jota , but it was a riders weekend, 21 degrees and blue bird days, so the bike riding took over the bike building, I was out on the MV for quite a lot of that time
I have been in a rut with the Jota, over the exhaust , not really having come up with a solution there, but there maybe one arriving next week that could work. In the meantime I have ditched the zinc plated bolt idea for the engine mount bolts, As I am using them to also hold a few extra brackets down, I need longer ones, and finding zinc 8.8 in metric fine thread in the lengths I want, has proven difficult, so I am making some in Super duplex, which is equal or better in every way to 8.8, Im not a fan of zinc plated or nickel plated things, and making these in super duplex means I can hit them with the bead blaster and dull down their shine, pricey, but worth it... there you go Piet... secret out about ugly bolts and fasteners not being there for ever:cool:
Tuesday I drew up V1 of the electrics box cover, and printed it and fitted it last night, I knew it was just to get a datum of dimensions, but strewth it looked terrible ( see photo 1), like I said it was just for measurements , but it gave me a few ideas, so after fitting last night, V2 needed to be drawn up with more curves involved
My real job has gotten quite busy again lately, not a sign of the economy recovering from covid!, but more a sign of the seasonal change of boat world, All my winter projects have now come back to life, and I am doing longer hours... or perhaps more normal hours for me, back into the 70 hours plus a week lifestyle.
The ex has finally now decided that she didnt get enough first time round in the divorce and half a decade later she's decided I really shouldn't have my kids at all so the wagons have been circled and hatches battened down, and I am working on keeping my kids safe and happy. Thats taking the most amount of time at the moment... 5 hours in a lawyers office every couple of days sucks the wind out of your sails and the time out of the day, so that severely limits garage time..

Its now 0745 in the morning, Im in the office, I got here at just before 7 am , I am procrastinating , I have just made another espresso , so just for you chris... i quickly did a rendering of what V2 will look like to cover the electrics, its very Darth Vader, Im more star wars than star trek, but I think thats a generational thing , and it mirrors nicely the curve of the rear mudguard, where that shows itself in the old battery space. I intend to print this, this weekend and have it finalised to make in either carbon, or print in HIPS .

Super Dulux might reveal some nice house colours, Chris ... but if you want to know what Super Duplex is, you'll have to enter that into the search menu!! ;):ROFLMAO:

Sounds like you're really having fun, Todd ... NOT!! Thank dio there are motos to divert some of that negative energy. I got my bits back from the black satin powder coat dudes yesterday - so nice to see something finished on the beast ... onward (with limited time also!).

I’m at the hardware store asking how Herritage Green paint can go through an engine mount without running.

Time for a sausage
Bunnings? We dont get sausage sizzles here at hardware stores... two of them I go to have cafes similar to what you find in gas stations. I miss a good snag
