Slow cranking

Well another disappointment all afternoon removing,strip, clean and inspect ,machine commutator ,face brushes,looking good but still slow cranking,relay next ,then time to worry about tight motor ,oh the joys of owning a classic Italian superbike

Hi laverda collective ,can anyone tell me if the starter is easily removed without stripping the side cover off on a 1977 1000 motor please,
Really slow cranking with new battery.

What's the CCA rating on your new battery?
I had a new BikeMaster MS12-19-BS AGM that didn't cut it (slow to no cranking), went with a Mega Crank MTX-16L AGM Battery, 350 CCA, 21AH, per Lee87H recommendation and all good.
 
Have you tried jump leads direct to a battery?

No not yet, was convinced it was starter motor but unless under load it’s misbehaving it all wizzes round perfectly

just fitted new yuasa 30 ah battery
 
I once had the problem that the starter worked but the clutch just turned the crank a bit. Issue was the starter clutch….

Could be just that andre but will try car battery and jump leads straight to starter tomorrow and hopefully that’ll give me an indication of where the problem lies
 
Leads all look good and negative to motor is new cable ,will measure voltage while cranking tomorrow and try bypassing relay paul ,would like to be able to load test starter motor or try another unit
After you've confirmed that the engine turns over normally by hand. Measuring the battery voltage while cranking is a useful thing to do. If you get severe voltage drop (say less than about 9V), that indicates that the starter motor is pulling a heap of amps. In that case you might have a knackered starter. Failing insulation in the windings. It's basically just short-circuiting without producing much torque. If the starter motor gets very hot after a couple of attempts at starting, that's also an indication that it's not well. That's exactly the way my starter went when it failed.
 
186 - that's what it says. Innaresting. The mini LiFePo I bought has 520CCA, which is why i thought 186 sounded like a small number for a 30AH. If it starts a Guzzi Californian I can't imagine it lacks grunt.
