A Tale of Two Titties

Can you flood a 2010 BMW (not Italian I know so for the bikes sake please don’t eject me from this forum) G650 GS? Cos I couldn’t start her, then did some girl mechanics 😳 (did my hair, painted my nails and gave the bike a little talking to),

Then called my friend G and he tried to talk me through starting a motorcycle 🙈🤣🙈 then got her started about an hour later and smoke seemed to be coming from the engine.

So, I’m guessing with my highly proficient girl mechanic skills that she was burning off the fuel I first flooded her with??? That’s providing she’s not fuel injected which I’m guessing not cos of her age???

Help anyone 😳🤷‍♀️

It does sound like you'd flooded it. Did the smokiness clear up?
If it happens again, roll the throttle wide open and hit the starter button. That should dry it out.
It was clearing but smelled terrible so I switched her off but will try your suggestion thanks 🙏

And did it smell like petrol or oil? If petrol, could be a reminder for all to shut off the fuel when not in use. Nobody wants a 'hydraulic lock' event. Trust me.
Ok, that sounds bad, to be honest it smelt more like hot rubber but if it helps the smoke bloom was white.

Hello Nadia, manners prior, apologies. Mmmmmm its not over rich fouling, anything been changed or altered since the last time it was started? Prior to the current issue that is. j.

The first time I rode an injected bike I was told DONT TOUCH THE THROTTLE, for a cold start. It seems the computer said NO.

I'd be very surprised if a 2010 BMW has carburettor induction. Pretty much everything was fuel injected by 2010 to meet emission standards.
I just googled the specs and it confirms fuel injection. It's difficult to flood an injected engine, but I suppose it's possible if the plugs are fouled.

A white cloudy emission coming out of the exhaust could be smoke or steam. If it hangs in the air for a long time and smells like smoke, then it's smoke. If it dissipates quickly, then it's steam.

Smoke is an indication of oil in the cylinder. That would explain the difficulty in starting too (oily spark plug). But how it got there is the question you need to answer. Has anyone worked on the engine since you last started it?

Steam is an indication of moisture in the engine, either from condensation or coolant leaking into the cylinder.

Check the oil and coolant levels and appearance. If they're normal, start it up again and let it warm up. If the cloud clears it may be ok. It could have just been a bit of water vapour from condensation. If it continues to blow smoke (or steam), then you have a problem that needs further investigation.

If either the oil or coolant look abnormal (milky appearance in oil or an oily scum in the coolant) then you could have a blown head gasket.

Let us know how you get on. Folks here aren't Laverda snobs. We're happy to help solve any problem.

How long since it was serviced? Might just need a new spark plug. They will just hook it up to the laptop though and if that doesn't find a faulty sensor they give it a clean bill of heath. How long had it been sitting, what was the weather/temperature?
Keep riding it and see if it keeps happening.

GS 650 Rotax engine ? If injection version Seems they have some electrical gremlins bit like the Zane - does the fuel pump prime ( ie can you hear it priming when ignition goes on) dodgy fuel or blocked injector - bit of a needle in a haystack jobbie at distance

Really appreciate your help and explanation. I know Bathurst is blistering cold some mornings additionally, this has been an exceptionally wet winter. Both bikes (Guzzi and GS) have struggled this winter so I appreciate any help 🙏🙏🙏

Nothing touched J and they are not really accessible to street view - I’m now paranoid and thinking vandalism 🙈but I truly doubt it given they are guarded by three STCD. It has however, been extremely cold and wet over night, the bikes are under cover but the GS has been ridden more sine I had trouble with the Guzzi battery. I rode it on Saturday with no issues but Sunday morning was a problem. Thanks again for all the input 🙏

STCD are Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs AKA Smithfield Cattle Dogs for the non Aussie’s

Herbert talking to himself in the mirror - yes cattle dogs talk and yes they are born with the docked tail. Kev looking stunning and yes they look like the dingo because they are bred from the dingo.

Yes it does have the Rotax engine and no I can’t hear it priming. All of your input is greatly appreciated, you can’t imagine the confounded looks I get taking it in for service but Dave Ward has been wonderful since I recently purchased the Guzzi 🙏 thanks Dave.

Hey Nadia go and pull the dipstick out so you can see what the engine oil looks like should be a nice honey color or maybe a little darker if it hasn't been changed for a while, if the oil appears OK start the engine, dont twist the throttle 'while its cranking then once running take a video of whats coming out of the exhaust and show us.
