Bike ban in Germany on Sundays

I do ?get? why many people don?t appreciate the noise of a car/motorcycle with a loud exhaust, although the tone can make some more offensive than others. Certain 2 stroke motocross bikes an d jet skis spring to mind having been afflicted by them from time to time.
That is why, unlike when I was young and didn?t give a toss if someone could hear me coming or going from the other side of the world, I do now at least try to keep the noise down in residential areas; and where it would be just plain anti social to do otherwise.
I must also admit that even I, a lover of Jotas, SFCs and Montys on full throttle, do sometimes appreciate the relaxing smoothness and relative quietness of the BMW super scoot.  :o

I once worked at a helicopter company that was situated beside a car lot. Standard procedure when completing test flights was to do a 180 mph low pass in front of the hangar to signify that all was well. Bosses orders you see .....

Unfortunately for the handyman at the car dealership ....... it was his job to turn off the car alarms after said low pass ....... could be 20 or more cars sometimes. I did give him a ride a couple of times and he wasn't as upset after that .....

Thanks Jim, some massive Douglas fir there, imagine the cost to get those logs out and still it is a viable operation.
Must be less and less of that going on now with the reduction in old growth forests.

Seems a ridiculous way to go about logging - expensive, spewing out av gas exhaust - having a chopper pick up a few spindly offcuts of the tree seems as sensible to me as using a Lav to do the post run
 
Its rough country, there used to be a show on TV about logging there. They would stretch a cable high up and very long and pull them out like a flying fox, zip line style. Crazy dangerous scrambling about with this going on. Seems all the easy stuff is long gone.
 
These days they usually take the lot and shred it for weetbix furniture, disgusting. Far better to snig out the odd tree for cabinet or other specialty. Went kayaking yesterday, boat engine noise from speedboats, camping cruisers, jetskis etc galore all around. Fact of life.
 
I think Ken Kesey's "Sometimes a Great Notion" was set there. Movie with Paul Newman had a fantastic scene where Newman marches into a union office with this HUGE chainsaw and saws the union official's desk in half, while the guy is still sitting. Politics were very difficult to follow in the book, but Kesey wrote it AFTER "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" so he'd done a LOT of LSD by then.

:D I used to visit a distributor in Wales selling our tractors - one day I went in and the office had changed new desk etc - at lunch I found out that the Principal was shagging the secretary whose husband had come in with a chain saw and cut the desk in half while the guy was pinned to his seat - true story !

TC there really wasn't any old-growth logs in those videos I doubt very much that any of those trees was more than 30 years old. In the US and Canada logging is a massive extremely organized business with millions of trees cut down annually just as many if not more are replanted. It is a never-ending cycle of planting and cutting of trees as a cash crop. Most old growths are protected those old growths that are not protected are rarely clear-felled (unless it is private land) with only selected trees being cut and replacements planted to ensure the conservation of the species and availability for the future needs.

Hey Dave, yeah I just find it amazing that they can afford all that man and machine power and still make a profit.
I have been watching the quality of DF or Oregon as we call it deteriorate over the last 20 plus years.Used to be able to get quality number 1 clear grade Oregon at any time, long wide lengths ,now its almost impossible to get good clear in long lengths which is why I made the assumption that all the old growth must now be gone.
Right now Clear Oregon can be the same price as Spruce which is not the way it used to be at all.
Can still find nice lengths in amongst the rubbish but you have to search a whole pack for two maybe 3 lengths.
Seems it was not as renewable as we thought.... ???
All depends what you want to make out of it I guess..

Dang!  I used to live in Austin back in the 70's and rode a Moto Guzzi 850 LeMans with the factory race pipes on it to work every day.  Was not too bad unless you got it over about 3500 rpm, then it tended to sound off! LOL!  I still have it.  My SFC has the twin exhausts from the factory, I never acquired the 2 into 1 for it.  I still ride the 900SS with the Imola high pipes around.  However, I am 22 miles from the nearest town of 785 people and I never ride it to town.  Sure stirs up the cattle near the road !! LOL!  I am fortunate to live out where I do.  If I hear any vehicles on the road to my house, I usually am expecting them.  If I am not expecting them, I take suitable precautions!  This is Texas and trespassing has some serious consequences.  That being said, I very rarely see anyone else on a motorcycle out here!
 
Bit of a discussion yesterday at our old farts Saturday morning gathering after I mentioned I had gone back to the quieter standard lanfranconis on my 350. Shock, horror: don?t you know ?loud exhausts save lives? was the general response from around the table.
There then followed much recounting of how an open exhaust had dozy drivers/cyclists/pedestrians/birds/hedgehogs/horse riders clearing a path for the advancing motorcycle or had prevented them for stepping out in front of/turning across the path of said motorcyclist.
So there you are, debate over..... :D
 
I am in both camps with my noisy Jota piped TOG and super quiet Pan European, so I experience both,
TOG is great and always will be, but I do consciously throttle off if I see something/asomeone that might get alarmed, and in country lanes I am willing to stop and turn her off if horse looks needy, some do, some don't, I do like roaring on big throttle openings past cyclists two abreast going up the local steep hills and I sweep VERY close by, bit of getting my own back, this village is uphill to get in from every direction and is more than a magnet for cyclists, who bring nothing to the village except congestion and rude behaviour, giving them as good as they give is wrong and doesn't work, I know that, but still do it, there is an unwritten rule of not parking two wheels in the pavement in the main street of the village, that doesn't seem to apply to the weekend push bikers, the quiet Pan is great for "getting on" and not attracting attention, but I do use the hooter on it! and never do on TOG except for MOT.

As a Lav rider and cyclist I cannot condone anyone riding close for whatever reason. Here in WA there is a 1m min clearance law to cyclists - 1.5m on roads over 60km/h. Despite the fact the whole world now knows what 1.5m looks like it still seems many road users have already forgotten. One should always remember - the other party will come second if there is a y contact.

Got nothing against loud bikes, excessively loud bikes are a different matter.
Nice to here that you do the same as I do regarding equine traffic and that you hold cyclists in such high regard Clem ;)
 
Bicycle rider and loud motorcycle rider - I'm both. I've done well over 100,000km on bicycles over the last 20 years and try to be polite and never behave in an arrogant manner. If I'm with friends or in a bunch, we always single file where two abreast would block traffic (and create aggro). Sometimes even single file is tricky and drivers will put you at risk rather than wait ... except in Italy - they are so polite to cyclists, they'll sit behind you and wait until it's safe and they can give you good clearance, even a polite toot to let you know they're coming past (or probably even as a 'hello'). Coming back to Australia was hell by comparison.

I do my bit - but unfortunately there are still many drivers who seem to deliberately 'shave' you, even when you're squeezed into the gutter trying to 'help', obviously ranting to themselves that a cyclist should get off the fukken roads that THEY PAY FOR ... never mind the fact that virtually every adult road cyclist has a car sitting at home that they 'pay for the roads' with through their rego and fuel taxes. I hate to say it, but in Oz, tradies are the absolute worst offenders ... I'm guessing it's a testosterone, macho-bogan thing.

I have actually come across arrogant road cyclists riding two abreast on narrow lane-type roads, who refuse to go single file to let me drive (the car) past, even thought they would know you are the only car likely to come past them. As a cyclist I avoid hooting the horn, but inside the car I'm telling myself what a bad name pricks like that give us. I can understand where you're coming from Clem, but be careful!
 
Around where I live there are plenty cycle lanes, but the MAMILs think they are too important to use them and block the narrow roads for long periods with half mile tailbacks waiting until they wheeze onto a wide enough section of road..
