Building my Jota

Royal Enfield 500 single drum brake rear. Pivot bolt for the shoes acts as the anchor bolt, 12mm, goes through a slot in the swingarm. Bike came in with the anchor bolt sheared off. Stuffed the backing plate. Got all new parts, bolted it up, took it for a test ride around the block, snapped the bolt again, locked the rear wheel solid middle of the road. Nice flat spot on the tyre. Poxy heap of Indian shite.
Copied from Norton, works OK there. Maybe steel quality has something to do with it?

This is a front anchor point in double shear. Second frame bracket added to use extended bottom engine bolt. Done correctly the piece of 10mm bolt between the brackets is not threaded thus full strength. Best done when the frame is stripped and being braced/trued before paint.
Pic obtained at some difficulty hence poor pic. Probably the hardest part of an assembled bike to take a pic of.
This is a GS1000 where there is plenty of room to do it. Looking at previous pics it may not be so easy on a Laverda.

I'm happy using 8mm bolts in single shear on light bikes in this application. Personally, anything over 150kg I'd use 10mm or maybe 8mm in double shear.

Got it. The SFC is single shear both ends - but I can't lock up my rear wheel unless I'm doing about 5kph. Done 100,000km with that setup so not too concerned.

Ok if you're doing it for yourself and are prepared to accept the compromise.
I'm building stuff for other people to race. Yes, I do generally test ride it first, on a bumpy stretch of local road.
Most memorable was probably a full house Z!. Got back and the owner was big-eyed "we could hear the wheelspin"
Yeah, but you couldn't hear my arse puckering....
Too old for this shit now.

I can relate to that Greg - we did loads of full house Z's in the late 70s in Perth. Off the dyno and a spin around the block - scary stuff. What it highlights is just how impressive modern day sports bikes are in controlling probably double the ponies that those Yoshi/Moriwaki Zs were putting out. Safe, easy to ride, stable at hyperspeeds.

Not wishing to just jump in and sound picky - but that is a fairly significant fracture in the outer web of the rear engine mount - what's it like at the mount point?

It’s the shadow from the lighting in my shop. I think I mentioned it elsewhere above ….. but it did give me a shock the first time I saw one of the photos I took. I couldn’t understand how I may have missed it. But it’s an illusion.

Yep - from post #509

'What shows up looking like a crack in the engine case, is just the shadow created by the workshop lighting over a cast mark.'

Easy to miss (the comment) and it does indeed look cracky!

I see it now (zooommmmed in) a flaw in the casting - for once am very happy for shadowing :)

Round lights would mirror the 1989-91 ZZR 250s in the 750 it was copied from - everything on the 750 is the same, just bigger (including headlights). So you need info from a 1989-91 is my guess.

A la ...

The 89 model lights look like they have the bracketry similar to my 250, which makes them unsuitable,

But this link for a 93-96 looks more promising ... hard to tell what's 'under the hood' though.

Right... bloody long time between drinks !

I did some hunting and I have found some head lights that are homologated from a company called Shin-yo, I already have one of their models on my Morini 500, and I came across some twin head lights that they had in a plastic surround, they also sold the inserts.

so this is a project that may or may not be used, Im trying to recreate the look of the endurance spots, but with lights that are homologated as head lights....

so to start with Im 3 d printing buckets for the head light insert, and then a new aluminium front plate, to try and get the closest appearance I can, and that I am happy with

the headlight inserts were only 30 euros each, and its just my design and print time to get a mock up sorted, So for the moment everything else will be printed in plastic and sat on the bike , to see if I like the look while I finish other details , then if I like what I see the buckets will be machined up in aluminium

what i am looking for if some one has some buckets/housings they dont want anymore from some marchal 819's or 810's I want the fittings of the back of the housings, see attached pic with the fitting circled in red , they dont have to be spotless, but good enough for me to re finish , I want my lights to at least mount the same way

photo one shows a rough speed print bucket , Im only 15mm deeper than the Marchal photo 2 shows a better shot of it, photo 3 is the bracket I need 2 of to use on the back of my buckets , so if anyone has some kicking about I would like to hear from you

Finally I got a bit of time to play bikes today. The new bike lift turned up Wednesday, Today I built it and moved bikes around in the shed to bget the 1200 up on it. With the help of a mate Toni, I got the papers sorted for the 1200, which means we have a year to get it finished, I’m hoping four months, the plan is strip the 1200, paint the frame Miguel and I are going to try and cerakote it, I have a spare swing arm, that I may or may not brace, to use , and then move everything over from the Jota to the 1200, and then turn the Jota back into a standard looking Jota, color to be decided. But for you Paul, and just for you it won’t be. Orange.
The engines will be mixed up for a bit with the pristinely built Jota engine from Red going into the 1200, until I can send the 1200 engine to Red, for a birthday, and then it will go in the 1200 when it’s back, and the Jota engine will go back to the Jota and all the numbers frames and engine will be match match again.

this is the only way I can get both bikes legally registered here in Spain, Because of rules, and rules must I guess, A bit of a ball ache, but it is what it is, and I get a second lav back on the road almost at the same time as the first. Then it will be time to,work of on the SF2 race bike, and the SF3.

in any case it was bloody nice sitting in the shed with a Dark and Stormy tonight, looking at my toys
