Future for Zane bikes?

Well it's not looking too good on the chances of Regina making any more chain, so the alternative of an engine makeover or parking your bike up is now becoming the favoured options.
However, there is still an outside chance of changing Regina's mind if enough owners pester them to make some more chain. You can obtain contact details from here: https://www.reginachain.net/contact/
Get writing!

There is a chance that someone with a prior relationship with Regina could apply a bit of leverage. I’m not sure if Piero got supplies of the duplex rear chain for his spaceframe kits made or called someone who knew which dark corner of the stores to search. May be worth asking him to help?

I think that the best for your crank at Keiths is to go and fetch it.
When that will be possible.

Paul
OFF TOPIC, sorry...

for other's people interest, it looks only DHL is working properly out of England as far as sender has an account and EORI number. Keith should have that. Otherwise Todd has the right man for that....
At the end is always about the same thing.....💰💰💰
But if my only chance at the end is go and fetch it.... I will do it! but when the weather up there is not so crappy..:D

that was what I wanted to say.... the only chance to get that people to listen to us is if somebody goes there, showing his face and talk with somebody, if it is somebody with contacts... even better.
I think writing is worthless when they even bother to answer a simple polite thing, like, "sorry, unfortunately...."

Yes, I seriously think the Regina approach needs to be made by an Italian and someone "with connections". I think emails from general consumers to these sort of companies just go direct to the 'ignore indefinitely' department - more so if written in english. Maybe talking to Giuliano Cogo, Brettoni (he races and builds plenty of 500's) or Piero and getting them to seek out connected friends would stand the best chance of success.

A bit of pondering re the conversion to 06B, a 500 seems to have a cam sprocket of 38 teeth from what I can find on the interwebz (someone with one might confirm). Pitch diameter of that in 5/16" is 91.07mm or thereabouts. Bizarrely, that is basically identical to a 30t 06B sprocket used on the big twins and triples which has a pitch diameter of 91.12. Makes ya wonder why the hell they used the odd sized chain eh?

Anyhow, as long as there's sufficient width the 06B should theoretically fit... Tip diameter of the sprocket will be a bit bigger as will wrapped chain outer diameter (clearance in the head). Could possibly go down to a 14/28 setup if required, though keeping the diameter at the crank as big as possible is also good, PD drops from 45.8 for 15t to 42.8 for 14t. The overall length of chain will come into it too, trying to get it close to the same in the hope that the stock tensioner blades might be able to be used.

Another imponderable... is the C107 chain 5/16" or 8mm? I have heard both quoted. The two are close but not close enough.

Hi Miguel

the crank can be shipped at the metal cost value of the crank. Eg 100 euros max, then you dont have high import duties. We need to be clever, the value of the crank is its material weight in metal, not the replacement cost.

You also need to find a transporter who won't throw the crank in the back of the van. I wouldn't trust anybody with a rebuilt assembled crank.
Fitting the rebuilt crank in a pair of spare cases is probably the easiest option.
I've always been to fetch my cranks. It was easy when Phil Todd did them. 2 hours drive, 1 hours ferry.

here is a photo of a 500 center pin

Steve is right and was something I was wondering about, why did Laverda choose that chain pitch in the first place
There is more to this than just making new crank pins and sprockets

I have contacted Piero to see if he can assist as well as 3c Moto, who were prepared to place an initial order of 400 chains. Whether Piero can make the difference we will have to wait and see.

I have just received a Commando 850 cylinder head from the USA, it was classed as metal hardware and valued at $100

I've had a response from Piero and he says as Regina is now owned by the Yanks he hasn't got any influence with the new management, although on the Regina website it says it is been owned by the same family for four generations! So perhaps we need some US based owners to do some digging.

I took a look in Dun & Bradstreet to see if there was US ownership information there but no indication of ownership change. If anyone can share information about who that new US owner might be then I'll look further into it. Yes there is a REGINA USA, INC. company with HQ in Milwaukee for sales in the US but it appears to be a subsidiary of the parent in Italy.

And if it’s lost in transit your insurance will cough up 100 euro for your lovely new crank....?? o_O:)

I couldn't find the post from Steve you refer to... what do you mean with " there is more than making new crank pins and sprockets"?

The 500 journal has 17T, the sprocket diametre is a little smaller than the 15T twin centre pin (pitch is the same as triples).

There may be clearance problems to the locating pin for the lower end of the tensioning blade if using 15 teeth, 14 or 13T may be an option. 13T would be more favourable for better wear distribution, but this may reduce the pin cross-section a bit. The whole issue rests upon the number of links in the chain, a link more or less can prohibit fitting/tensioning completely.

NOTHING is as easy as it seems. If this mod were easy, it would have been done long ago.

Well, I was meaning in relation to steve’s post.

but yes, I see the problematic. But, changing the teeth pitch doesn’t mean necessarily to change the diameter, I mean, when designing it, you can take the new teeth distance and put the necessary number of teeths to achieve the closest possible total diameter of the original sprocket...?
Where I see the most difficult part, is with this slight diameter modifications in the crank and the camshafts, and how to design them so that no extra chain pin is needed for a few mm, because then the tensioner will not be enough.
A possible solution could be a dummy crank and cam sprockets printed in 3D, and try different options?
